Hair Do Project Hair Do Project seeks to document the seemingly ordinary task of getting a haircut in an extraordina

The Hair Do Project invites our community to speak frankly about itself by asking a simple, sometimes whimsical, question, “What more is there than meets the eye?” What are the stories behind the haircuts, the hairstyles, the outward appearances of people we meet and interact with every day? We are exploring complex social questions about race class, gender and community by conjuring the magic and

subjectivity of appearance through the camera lens, the storyteller, and the familiar routine of a haircut. We are capturing and showcasing local stories about the common experience of hair and hair styling by creating a documentary and photo exhibit. Consciously or not, we all rely on obvious markers like hair – its color, texture, length and style – to sort individuals into groups. We make judgments about new people before speaking to or interacting with them; these first impressions can be helpful or harmful, constructive or divisive.
