💙💛 October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month! 💛💙 Fact #15 Translocation, a type of Down syndrome that accounts for 3 to 4% of all cases, is the only type of Down syndrome known to have a hereditary component. Of those, one-third (or 1% of all cases of Down syndrome) are hereditary.

The Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro is celebrating the incredible individuals with Down syndrome who make our families, schools, workplaces, and communities better simply by being exactly who they are.

For the next 31 days, we’ll be sharing 31 facts about Down syndrome—facts that educate, celebrate, challenge misconceptions, and remind us just how important acceptance, advocacy, opportunity, and inclusion truly are.

We hope you’ll follow along, share what you learn, and help us spread awareness throughout October. Because when we learn more, we understand more—and when we understand more, we create communities where everyone belongs. 💙💛

💙💛 October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month! 💛💙 Fact #14 NDSS uses the preferred spelling, Down syndrome, rather than “Down’s syndrome.” Down syndrome is named for the English physician John Langdon Down, who characterized the condition, but did not have it.

The Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro is celebrating the incredible individuals with Down syndrome who make our families, schools, workplaces, and communities better simply by being exactly who they are.

For the next 31 days, we’ll be sharing 31 facts about Down syndrome—facts that educate, celebrate, challenge misconceptions, and remind us just how important acceptance, advocacy, opportunity, and inclusion truly are.

💙💛 October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month! 💛💙 Fact #13 “Intellectual disability” or “cognitive disability” has replaced “mental retardation” as the appropriate term. NDSS strongly condemns the use of the word “r-word” in any context. Using this word is hurtful.

💙💛 Meet Our 2026 Buddy Walk Baby Marshal, Lena Katherine! 💛💙

There’s nothing sweeter than welcoming the newest little faces to our Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro family! 🥰

We are SO excited to introduce you to precious Lena Katherine! 💕

This little sunshine loves eating pasta 🍝, reading books with her big brother 📚, and snuggling with Mommy! She’s also busy mastering some BIG milestones, like clapping her hands and sitting up all by herself! 👏🏼 And when she’s not busy stealing hearts, you can find her soaking up the sunshine outdoors! ☀️

Lena Katherine, you are already bringing so much joy to our community, and we can’t wait to watch you grow, celebrate every milestone, and cheer you on every step of the way! 💙💛
