Purpose:
Technology is not an accessible commodity, and neither are the skills necessary to understand and operate these highly complex novelties of the 21st century. One particular issue is that these “commodities” are necessary in the workplace. This undercuts the lower socioeconomic class who may have never owned a computer, or even worse, never operated one. Computers can be seen in shipping,
stocking, cashiering, secretarial, and many others. As such, owning a computer is can be seen as wealth, and coupled with knowledge is also seen as potential wealth. Action:
Donations of "old", "broken", and/or "unwanted" computers will be transformed into “just like new” computers running Linux, which is a free non-profit operating system. Implementation:
These computers will be sold, for about 20~40$ (at this time), to lower socioeconomic people in Greensboro. Recipients will have to take a computer class at a yet to be determined public facility, as well a tutorial on how to use Linux computers.
