Mr. and Mrs. Smith both served in the Army Reserves for many years, and they both work full time jobs.
In 2019, they were renting a house and the owner wanted them to but the house but they were not ready for that. The owner sold the house, and they had 10 days to vacate the property. They were unable to secure another home in that amount of time, so they put all their things in storage and moved into the Studio 6 Motel.
Shortly after moving into the hotel, Mrs. Smith was diagnosed with breast cancer. She immediately began treatment but her out of pocket costs were so high, coupled with the fact that they were paying over $2,000 a month to stay in the hotel, they lost everything.
Mrs. Smith has been in remission for 5 years. She and her husband both work full time and are very hard workers.
On April 29, 2026, the city of Greensboro shut down Studio 6 due to the amount of crimes that were being committed there. Mr. and Mrs. Smith were put into another hotel and the city of Greensboro paid for that stay.
A staff member with The Servant Center learned that they were both veterans and she reached out to them to see if The Servant Center could assist them in any way.
The staff member spoke to Shanna Reece, the executive director of The Servant Center, and she reached out to a private donor who graciously donated enough funds to cover an application fee and security deposit.
Mr. and Mrs. Smith moved into their new home on May 19, 2026 and with the generous donation from the donor, The Servant Center was able to pay their security deposit and pro-rated rent for May. Additionally, they were able to refer Mr. and Mrs. Smith to The Barnabas Network that will enable them to get furniture for their new home.
When Mrs. Smith called to inform her of their appointment with Barnabas, she was at work and she said that when she got off work, she would be going home, not to a hotel room but to their home. 🏠
