Scouts BSA Troop 109

Scouts BSA Troop 109 Trustworthy. Loyal. Helpful. Friendly. Courteous. Kind. Cheerful. Thrifty. Brave. Clean. Reverent, but most importantly, prepared both mentally, physically and morally.

A scout is friendly. There is a premise in scouting called "do a good turn daily" which is best understood by Lord Baden-Powell's remarks taken in the early years of scouting. “By encouraging, in a healthy, cheery, and not in a sanctimonious and looking-for-reward spirit, your Scouts to do good turns as a first step, and to do service for the community as a development, you can do more for them even than by encouraging their proficiency or their discipline or their knowledge, because you are teaching them not how to get a living so much as how to live.”
Community service is a key component of scouting and for good reason. Scouts do not seek reward when doing their good turn, but instead volunteer their time to genuinely help others.

A scout is helpful. But what does helpful mean? According to Baden-Powell's remarks, a scout should be prepared for "any old thing" including helping anyone regardless of personal beliefs. At work, I bag and process coffee. If my boss needs my help to lift a bag of coffee, i jump right in and help him because it's the right thing to do.

What does it mean to be loyal? To me it means sticking by someone side regardless of personal disagreements. At means helping somebody through the tough stuff and celebrating their accomplishments and victories alongside them.

Trustworthy. What does it mean to be trustworthy? It means to be a man (or woman) of your word. If I promise something, I will deliver unless extenuating circumstances arise.

"Without trust, communication breaks. Here’s why: In any human interaction the required amount of community is inversely proportional to the level of trust." -Ben Horowitz

Heads up: Tonight at 6:30, we have a Cub Scout meeting. Tom and I will be working with the scouts on various requirements. If you or someone you know has a child from k-5 that would be interested, feel free to get involved in this rewarding experience.

At 7:30, we will have a Patrol Leader's Conference. This is a meeting for Troop 109 patrol leaders and scouts who hold leadership positions, generally held after a campout to discuss what went well, what could be improved and what didn't go so well.

A bit of info about the admin of this page for transparency:

My name is Patrick Barnes and I am an Eagle Scout and a fully trained Assistant Scoutmaster who has been on all three High Adventure bases: Philmont, Sea Base and Northern Tier.

I am going for my Wood Badge this coming August, which is a more challenging and complex leadership skills training to help me improve the troop.
