Henry K. Burtner American Legion Post 53

Henry K. Burtner American Legion Post 53 Greensboro's oldest American Legion Post serving veterans and the community since 1919.

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans’ organization devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization, committed to mentoring youth and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities, advocating patriotism and honor, promoting strong national security, and continued devotion to our fellow s

ervice-members and veterans. Hundreds of local American Legion programs and activities strengthen the nation one community at a time. American Legion Baseball is one of the nation’s most successful amateur athletic programs, educating young people about the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship and fitness. The Operation Comfort Warriors program supports recovering wounded warriors and their families, providing them with "comfort items" and the kind of support that makes a hospital feel a little bit more like home. The Legion also raises millions of dollars in donations at the local, state and national levels to help veterans and their families during times of need and to provide college scholarship opportunities. The American Legion is a nonpartisan, not-for-profit organization with great political influence perpetuated by its grass-roots involvement in the legislation process from local districts to Capitol Hill. Legionnaires’ sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington. The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation's veterans’ community, backed by resolutions passed by volunteer leadership. The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism. The organization belongs to the people it serves and the communities in which it thrives.

Nearly 250 years after he died in the Battle of Camden, researchers identified Pvt. John Pumphrey as one of more than a dozen Continental Army John Does that were found near the battlefield.

On Thursday, researchers in South Carolina announced that they confirmed the identity of one set of remains. Pumphrey, whose death was not recorded and whose identity was nearly lost to history, had been from a prominent Maryland family who enlisted in the Continental Army in his early teens. Given his service in the 7th Maryland Regiment, he is believed to have taken part in several campaigns in the nearly four years he fought in the Revolutionary War.

Researchers from the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology and Anthropology found the bodies in 2022 after coming across some exposed bones. The Historic Camden museum began studying the site and reached out to FHD Forensics to try and identify the 14 dead. It was determined that 13 were Americans while the 14th was British. According to the Baltimore Sun, a skull fragment — which turned out to belong to Pumphrey — had a strong DNA sample. That, with genealogical databases, gave the researchers leads. Records from the area also helped to narrow the identity of the deceased, leading to Pumphrey. The young private joined the Continental Army at around 14 in 1777.

**PTSD Resource Spotlight**

June is PTSD Awareness Month, and this week we're highlighting a powerful resource available through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs: the **PTSD Repository**.

The PTSD Repository was created by the VA's National Center for PTSD to help Veterans, family members, clinicians, researchers, and the public better understand what works in PTSD treatment. It brings together information from hundreds of PTSD treatment studies and clinical trials into one easy-to-access location. ([PTSD.va.gov][1])

Whether you're looking to learn about evidence-based therapies, understand treatment options, or simply become more informed about PTSD, this resource provides reliable, research-backed information. The repository includes data from more than 600 published PTSD treatment studies and is regularly updated as new research becomes available. ([PTSD.va.gov][1])

PTSD affects Veterans from every era of service, but recovery is possible. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

# # # 🇺🇸 Investing in Tomorrow's Leaders 🇺🇸

This week, two of the premier youth leadership programs sponsored by The American Legion Department of North Carolina are shaping the next generation of leaders across our state.

🎓 **Tar Heel Boys State** is underway at Chowan University, where young men from across North Carolina are gaining firsthand experience in citizenship, government, leadership, and public service. Participants build and operate their own mock governments while learning the responsibilities that come with self-governance.

🚔 **Student Trooper** is taking place at the North Carolina State Highway Patrol Training Academy in Raleigh, where students experience the discipline, professionalism, and leadership required of North Carolina State Troopers. The program provides a unique look into law enforcement, physical fitness, teamwork, and character development.

Both programs embody one of The American Legion's core missions: investing in young people and preparing them to become informed citizens, ethical leaders, and engaged members of their communities.

Henry K. Burtner American Legion Post 53 is proud to support these life-changing opportunities and wishes all participants a successful and memorable week.

The leaders of tomorrow are learning, growing, and serving today.

🇺🇸 **Good luck to all the citizens of Tar Heel Boys State and all the participants of Student Trooper 2026!** 🇺🇸
