Compass Greensboro We are a vocational training program for adults with disabilities wanting to work in hospitality

We are a non-profit located in downtown Greensboro, NC and we are passionate about connecting adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities to the greater Greensboro community and vice versa. We believe in the intrinsic value of every human and are fighting against the marginalization of people groups, specifically adults with disabilities. We expect and aim to change the way our communi

ty trains, interviews, and hires adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities so that our world becomes a more inclusive and diverse place, accepting and embracing of all people! Our vocational program is a 10-month job training program (specifically geared towards the hospitality and foodservice industries) for both students with IDD (complete with supported job placement and maintenance) as well as leadership and coaching classes for business owners and managers.

Curriculum focus: Communication! Communication that is clear and specific is vital in both the workplace and in your personal life. We focused this week on both verbal and non-verbal communication as well as how to let your employer know what you may need in order to succeed at your workplace. We also had some of our friends from Chez Genese (pictured above) speak to our students on a panel about their own experiences with these topics. One big takeaway this week was this- if you don’t understand what is being asked of you at work, always follow up to clarify! We are excited for our team to continue to grow in our communication skills!

Curriculum Focus: Emotional Regulation! Students are currently learning about emotions- how to identify them, how to describe them, and how their emotional state impacts their work and ability to connect with others. Emotional regulation is such an important part of our both our personal and professional development as humans. We are so thankful here at Compass to take the time to learn about emotional regulation in order to set our students up for success both in the workplace and in their personal lives.

Curriculum Focus: Modifications and guest allergies/preferences!

In the hospitality industry, one of our priorities is making the guest feel at home and taken care of. In the restaurant, that includes making sure each person is served food that can be both prepared and served to ensure both their enjoyment and safety. We are focusing this week on making sure both front and back of house students understand the difference between a guest allergy and preference and how to clearly communicate those needs to our kitchen. Another focus is learning which modifications the kitchen can accommodate and how to communicate that to guests! These are vital components of ensuring both the satisfaction and safety of our guests and team!

Curriculum Focus: Teamwork!

The restaurant industry is busy. There are a lot of moving parts that make a restaurant run smoothly and it is absolutely vital for you to work well on your team for there to be success for both your guests and the staff. Our curriculum creates space for students to learn how to work alongside one another effectively, how to communicate clearly using restaurant lingo, and how to help build a positive team environment. We want our students and staff to remember- we are all learning and growing. It's best to be kind to others always. We love this team and the chance to grow together!
