Growing Gardeners: A New Partnership Takes Root at Staples High School

The Greens Farms Garden Club’s Growing for Good project is cultivating something new: a partnership with Staples High School’s horticulture program through its Growing Gardeners initiative

What began as a volunteer outreach effort has grown into a promising partnership, with opportunities for students to gain hands-on gardening experience and perhaps help start seeds for Growing for Good during the winter months.

Through Growing Gardeners, the club hopes to nurture not only plants, but the next generation of gardeners. .org

This past week was very busy with our guided tour of Prospect Gardens on Tuesday afternoon that 14 enjoyed in good weather.

On Wednesday, Cindy Shumate, Landscape Designer, spoke to the horticultural class at Staples High School that Jude Smith and Maybette attended as partners with Prospect Gardens. Afterwards, Jude and I toured the greenhouse at Staples High School that was void of plants. Sad! But the greenhouse had a thorough clean due to an infection. The teacher, Carrie Tait, told us that they are in need of plants for the greenhouse. It would be wonderful if we could donate plants that the high school students could care for and learn about different plants. This week Growing for Good’s harvest was a 161.75 pounds donated to Homes with Home at the Gillespie Center. So far this season, we have donated 847.50 pounds and more to come with the fall crop! .org

Prospect Gardens — the spectacular 9-acre arboretum-style Greens Farms space featuring flowers, plants — is open to the public twice a year. The next date, (Sunday, May 31, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). The event is a partnership with the National Garden Conservancy.

Main garden designers Cindy Shumate and Judy Gardner will be there all day, telling stories and answering questions.

Greens Farms Garden Club members will explain how they plant, tend and harvest the 3-tiered vegetable garden. Last season, their harvest of over 1000 pounds was donated to local organizations that feed families in need.

The Staples high School Jazz Ensemble plays at 10:30 a.m. They’ll be fresh off an appearance last night, at New York’s Birdland Club. .org

Thank you garden enthusiasts for your support😊What a beautiful day and an incredibly successful plant sale! All our hard work truly paid off. We had customers lined up into the parking lot before we even opened, and it was so rewarding to see everyone leave smiling and with new plant knowledge. We sold 70% of our inventory by 10 AM! This is what we are all about, and we couldn’t be prouder of this accomplishment. Thank you and hope to see you next year 🌞
