UpSculpt

UpSculpt Empowering action against the crisis of ocean plastic pollution by engaging the public through art, science, and educational workshops.

All rights reserved. UpSculpt was founded by artist Cindy Pease Roe. While walking her dogs along the beach, she was shocked by all the plastic she found washed up on the shore. Cindy began collecting the plastic and bringing it back to her studio, turning what was once considered trash into thought-provoking sculpture. Using art as her platform, Cindy has become an environmental educator and publ

ic advocate, conducting workshops across the globe to educate people about the prevalence and danger of marine litter. After collecting plastic debris from the beach, Cindy cleans and sorts her findings by color and material, transforming displaced waste into meaningful art. This constructive art bears the name UpSculpt, born out of upcycling plastic marine trash and turning it into sculpture. To spread her message of awareness through art, Cindy has created an“UpSculpt” DIY kit, containing directions and tools to create your own whale from marine debris or upcycled materials. The kit encourages people of all ages to clean their beaches (or their closets) and use their imagination to create something meaningful.

“Whales represent a big idea and a big change. They are the largest animals in the world and can be found in every ocean, and, like the whales, we are all connected by the sea.” This connection resonates with people when they see Cindy’s meaningful art and the larger movement it represents, changing the world one Upsculpt whale at a time.

We’re so excited to return to the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium this summer for another Mini Sea Creature Workshop! 🐙🐠

Join us Monday, August 17 from 11 AM–12:30 PM for a fun, hands-on UpSculpt workshop where we’ll transform marine debris into whimsical mini sea creatures.

Using plastic and other debris collected from our shorelines, participants create mini sculptures while learning about ocean plastic pollution and how we can turn waste into something new. ♻️🌊

For registration and more information, check out Vanderbilt Museum!

Ten years ago, I founded UpSculpt with a simple belief: that art has the power to change the way we see the world.

Throughout this year, we’ll be reflecting with more fun throwbacks from projects we conducted a decade ago!

100% of this plastic was recovered from our shorelines. 🌊 Each piece is a reminder that what we leave behind doesn’t simply disappear.

As we kick off Plastic Free July and celebrate the Fourth of July, we’re heading into one of the busiest beach weekends of the year.

Plastic Free July isn’t about perfection. It’s about awareness. It’s about choosing reusables when we can, refusing what we don’t need, and remembering that every small action helps keep plastic out of our oceans.

Cheers to celebrating responsibly! 💙

Today is World Oceans Day 🌊

The ocean gives us clean air, food, recreation, and inspiration. Today is a reminder that some of the best ways to celebrate our oceans are also the simplest: slow down, breathe and appreciate the natural world around us.

Consider one small action that can make a difference. Choose reusable items over single-use plastics, leave no trace when visiting the beach, and help keep marine debris out of our waterways.
