An estuary is where freshwater from rivers mixes with saltwater from the ocean, creating one of the most productive ecosystems on Earth.

Marsh grasses and wetlands naturally filter pollutants and excess nutrients before they reach the ocean.

New Hampshire’s biggest day of giving is going on now and we’re a part of it!
NH Gives 2026 runs from June 9 at 5:00 PM through June 10 at 5:00 PM (JUST 1 HOUR LEFT). For 24 short hours, Granite Staters come together to support nonprofits across the state, and the Great Bay Stewards are participating!

During NH Gives 2026, the Great Bay Stewards have secured matching donations of 50% for the first $4,000 in donations of $50 or more! As an example, if you donate $50 to the Great Bay Stewards through NH Gives 2026, a $25 matching donation will be made to the Great Bay Stewards until such time as the matching donations are exhausted.

We have identified the University of New Hampshire as the host institution for the new NOAA Cooperative Institute Fostering Aquaculture Research and Markets. We will award $13,500,000 to the institute this year to advance U.S. marine aquaculture development. This is the largest single investment in aquaculture that NOAA has ever made.

The University of New Hampshire will be supported by academic, industry, and non-governmental organization partners. Researchers will investigate topics such as engineering and technology development, artificial intelligence for aquaculture, environmental observations and forecasting, marine aquaculture demonstration projects, risk management and vulnerability analysis, and seafood markets research.

Don't miss the spawning horseshoe crabs! Visit Great Bay Discovery Center (or other public access points on the bay) around the Squamscott River high tide and see these important arthropods as they come shore to lay and fertilize eggs. Enjoy the activity, admire these cool critters, but please give them some space as they are busy creating the next generation! Watch social media for pop up events with a volunteer educator at the waterfront and come learn from an amazing volunteer.
