Hancock County Herb Society

Hancock County Herb Society The Hancock County Herb Society meets in fellowship to promote the enjoyment and education of garden herbs. Members meet in fellowship once a month.

The Hancock County Herb Society is a non-profit organization in Hancock County, Indiana. Members strive to offer opportunities to experience herb related topics, including food, crafts, service projects and guest speakers. An occasional field trip to interesting locations and events are planned. The gardens of the James Whitcomb Riley Home/Museum include several beds maintained by our volunteers.

It is our honor to maintain the Butterfly Garden, Pixy Garden, Pioneer Bed and Rose Arbor. Our annual plant sale held each May allows us to add features to the gardens such as the Rose Arbor and Bubbling Rock, plus signs quoting excerpts from J.W. Riley's poetry.

We are grateful for your support, particularly given the unfavorable weather conditions last weekend. Our customers are the best! Thank you!

Mistletoes are a large group of plants that are parasitic on aboveground parts of woody trees and shrubs. These perennial flowering plants have specialized roots that are able to pe*****te the host plant to derive water and nutrients.
Mistletoe attaches to host trees like oaks, willows, apples and pines, taking water and minerals, while also photosynthesizing. It is often spread via bird droppings, but some species eject their seeds. While a popular decoration, it can stress trees if heavily infected.
Mistletoe is poisonous to humans and pets, so please be careful when using it in decorations.
