In 1967, at age 23, I arrived in the United States from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine for internship and pediatric residency in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. What began as medical training became a lifelong commitment to serving the community. Over decades as an inner−city pediatrician, Milwaukee became my home,
guided by the Filipino values of service and compassion I carried with me.
In 2000, I noticed a troubling reality: families were missing routine well−baby visits simply because they lacked insurance. With the encouragement of my late husband, Dr. Juanito Singson, and as the first major project of the Philippine Cultural & Civic Center Foundation (PCCCF), I helped establish the Philippine Center Free Medical Clinic (FMC).
Initial funding of $3,000 from the Philippine Medical Association of Wisconsin (PMA−W), along with donated equipment from the Rizal−MacArthur Memorial Foundation (RMMF), made the clinic possible.
What began as a modest, mobile clinic in 2000 has grown into a permanent facility at Zablocki Park in Greenfield, Wisconsin, where it has operated since 2012. Today, the Philippine Center proudly hosts the only Philippine Center in North America with a dedicated Free Medical Clinic. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the FMC has provided more than $4.4 million in free medical care to over 4,000 uninsured and underinsured patients, regardless of race, age, gender, religion, employment, or citizenship status.
Beyond the clinic, I practice Pediatrics with Procare Medical Group. I have organized annual community Health Fairs and led biennial medical missions to San Jose, Batangas, from 2003 to 2015, bridging healthcare gaps both locally and globally. I am equally committed to preserving Filipino culture through leadership in University of the
Philippines Alumni Association of Wisconsin (UPAA−W), chairing the 2024 Golden Gala Fundraiser, co−organizing the Munting Tinig youth choir, and performing ukulele with the multigenerational Philippine Center Strummers.
Together, service and culture continue to unite and uplift our community across generations.
