Hancock County Humane Society

Hancock County Humane Society We are a no-kill, non-profit animal shelter run entirely by volunteers, funded entirely on donations.

The Hancock County Humane Society is a no-kill*, non-profit animal shelter located in Greenfield, Indiana. (We are not affiliated with, nor do we receive financial support from, the Humane Society of the United States.) We are currently open by appointment only, to meet available pets for adoption. This shelter has been in existence since 1977 and has always been staffed entirely by volunteers and funded entirely on donations from the local community (we do not receive public or government funding). We are a registered 501(c)3 organization listed on GuideStar. It is our goal to find permanent safe and loving homes for the pets in our care. We average 30-40 cats in our shelter and with foster volunteers. Our average intake of cats in a year, and adoptions of pets, is approximately 200. With the recent addition of a medical isolation suite to our facility, our volunteers in cooperation with local veterinarians are able to provide the daily care necessary to help more sick animals become healthy, adoptable pets. We work with other local shelters and rescue many cats from facilities who are sometimes forced to euthanize animals due to illness or space limitations. Please consider helping us with our mission, by donating via Facebook, PayPal, or our Amazon Charity List (links on the "How to Help" tab on our website).

*No-kill meaning healthy pets with good temperaments are kept until adopted no matter how many years it may take. We diligently attempt to treat unhealthy pets whenever possible.

Meet The Churu Boys - Whisper & Morrison. They love Churu Cat Treats. That's Morrison (aka Mo) at the end saying "send more".
Both Whisper & Mo are sweet, loving boys looking for their furever homes.
But make sure you have plenty of Churu Treats before taking one - or both - home!

When you visit our shelter, you will most likely be greeted by Spielberg. This handsome fellow sits on his perch by the door so he is the first to welcome visitors!

He's hoping to find his furever family & wants to make sure they don't miss seeing him.

Did you know that our shelter is operated by volunteers and funded entirely by donations and fundraisers?

One of the ways we support our shelter and pet food pantry is by collecting and recycling aluminum cans donated by our generous community members.

On Wednesday, a volunteer spent several hours crushing and bagging cans to prepare them for recycling. Early Thursday morning, an individual entered our property and took multiple bags of those cans. (Please note that our parking lot and building are under video surveillance.)

It's disappointing to see someone take resources intended to help shelter cats and families who rely on our pet food pantry. Every donation, no matter how small, helps us continue our mission of caring for animals and supporting our community.

We hope the person in this video enjoys the few dollars they received from these cans, because those funds were meant to help feed cats and support local families. We also hope they now know that our property is monitored and that future donations should be left for the animals they were intended to help.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support our shelter through donations, volunteering, and recycling efforts. Your generosity makes a difference every day.
