Building a Liberation Space: Intersectional Anti-Oppression Activism and Scholarship
with Dr. Diana Alvarez

What does liberation feel like? How do we build space for liberation and healing in our current world? In this interactive presentation, multidisciplinary artist and scholar Dr. Diana Alvarez will offer a decolonizing, intersectional, and healing framework for anti-oppression work in our communities, classrooms, and beyond. This presentation will nourish and energize our collective, lifelong work to banish all forms of oppression (i.e., colorism, racism, sexism, ableism, and trans- and q***r- antagonism) from our planet. Dr. Alvarez will perform music/poetry as part of this presentation, and participants will be invited to develop their own artistic visions for liberation.

Recommended for commercial and craft-based artists.

Building on her 25 years of experience in the arts, Dee Boyle-Clapp now directs the Arts Extension Service at UMASS. In this training, she will introduce the elements of a business plan and information helpful for running your artist-based business. Through a mix of instruction and guided activities you will learn how to create a series of attainable business goals that shape the future of your art-based business, including how to describe your work, hire outside experts, handle financial details, and structure your business.

THE ART OF LICENSING w/ Allison Cole

Recommended for visual artists and craftspeople.

Allison Cole is an award-winning illustrator, artist and surface designer who never stops creating. Over the past fifteen years, she has worked with a wide variety of clients that span many different industries, including stationery, wall art, giftware, apparel, home furnishings and bolt fabric.

In this workshop participants will learn about the industry of surface design and art licensing, and discover how artists can get their designs on a wide variety of products by partnering with different companies. You will learn about marketing and branding your work, reaching clients and setting achievable goals.

In the afternoon following the group workshop, selected artists will be invited to meet individually (for 30 minutes) with Allison for personalized attention to their licensing questions.
