We're located in Hancock County, Indiana, and have a strong and active membership that serves as Purdue Extension Master Gardeners. Extension Master Gardener programs are accredited through each state's land-grant university (https://mastergardener.extension.org/). In Indiana, the Purdue University Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture in West Lafayette is the home of the Purdue Extension Master Gardener program. Turnip lanterns were used before the modern pumpkin jack-o’-lantern! In ancient Ireland, revelers hollowed out large turnips (or potatoes or beets) and carved them into a demon’s face to frighten away spirits. They lit the turnips from within with a candle or a piece of smoldering coal 🎃🎃🎃

They then placed the lanterns in the windows and doorways of their homes, believing that the carvings would scare off evil spirits and welcome deceased loved ones inside. Irish immigrants arriving in the New World during the early 1800s found the plentiful, easier-to-carve pumpkins to be ready substitutes for turnips.

Grow the timeless aeonium plant in your home! 🪴 The name aeonium comes from the Greek word aiōnios, which translates to “ageless.”

Some types of aeoniums develop long, stretched-out stems, which can make the plants top-heavy and cause them to droop. If this occurs, trim the stems back during cool weather while the plant is actively growing. Save the leafy tips you remove to grow into new plants.

Fun fact: In the Canary Islands, lizards have been observed visiting aeonium flowers and may help pollinate them!
