One of the family medicine physicians here at UNC wants to make sure doctors-in-training know the facts. "There are no benefits of breastfeeding," he tells his students. "There are risks of formula...

IBCLC, CLC, BFPC, LLLL - what does it all mean?!

It can be so confusing to navigate the field of lactation support! Thankfully our friends at United States Lactation Consultant Association have made this handy info sheet to help parents find the best lactation care for their situation: http://bit.ly/USLCAwhoswho. IBCLCs have the most training/education and broadest scope of practice, but all of these designations can play important roles throughout the breastfeeding journey!

Do you work in lactation support or did you get help from any of these sources? Let us know!

Please take moment to take this survey. They particularly need responses from TN and KY. We don't want them to not hear our voices, do we? Even if you are no longer nursing, take the survey. I hope you all are having a great summer and finding ways to keep cool.

Hi all....
I hope you are all doing well. I wanted to announce that I am going to discontinue having meetings for the time being. I gave it a two year try and I met some precious mothers and babies and they met each other and I know families were helped. It has been a good thing.
I know there is a need for breastfeeding support in our area, however a physical meeting does not seem to be the best way to meet those needs at present. I will still be available via phone (423-525-1042) and email (vanambergs@yahoo. com) and Facebook so send moms my way when needed. I will keep the group page up and post occasionally. If interest grows in the future, I am open to facilitating a group again. ---Deirdre

I am holding a meeting tomorrow. However attendance at the meetings has been so low during the past 6 months that I am considering no longer holding them for the time being. I don’t find the low attendance to be an personal affront or want anyone to feel pressured to attend. I hold them in order to meet a need and if a meeting setting doesn’t work for today’s mothers that is fine. I would still be available to local moms over the phone. I have publicized the meetings locally in nearly every free or nearly free way that I could. I suspect that due to changes in our society concerning how moms seek information and camaraderie attending a meeting is not as popular as it was in years past. Many moms are finding resources and fellowship digitally. If a group of mothers wanted to start meeting monthly in the future, I would be happy to start up the meetings again. I wanted to say what I have been pondering now so if I do decide to suspend meetings it won’t seem abrupt. I hope the post doesn't come across bitter or angry. It isn't meant to. I had typed it up in a more smooth form and then the phone locked up and shut down.....losing the whole message. Uggh!

At the risk of moms who pump stressing out at another "detail" of breastfeeding, I will post this for curiousity sake. The "take away" here is that your milk is formulated at night to help baby sleep. Also some parents try the pump a bottle and have Daddy do a night feed approach to sharing baby care......according to the info in this article that plan may actually backfire.

The levels of the components in breast milk change every 24 hours in response to the needs of the ba...

With October being breastfeeding cancer awareness month suddenly the media is filled with talk of breastfeeding cancer prevention, risk, detection, etc. So I am adding my plug for cutting your risk .....Just one year of breastfeeding over the course of her life cuts a woman's risk of breast cancer by a third, two years by a half, by seven yrs it is nearly zero risk.
