Two degrees from Tusculum University have positioned Joseph Winburn for success in health care and as a leader at his organization.
Winburn earned a Bachelor of Science in physical education, with an emphasis in athletic training, in 1994 and a Master of Arts in education, with a focus on adult learning, in 1998. He is a certified athletic trainer, who now serves as director of sports medicine and clinical administrator of Hyundai Medical at St. Joseph's/Candler, a regional health care organization in Georgia and South Carolina.
“My graduate degree from Tusculum served as the catalyst for my career advancement, directly qualifying me for promotion to my current role,” Winburn said.
Between his bachelor’s and master’s degrees, he served as director of sports medicine and industrial rehabilitation at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, which is now Greeneville Community Hospital, where he worked for two years. He spent seven years as coordinator of sports medicine at Hamilton Health Care System. For the last 22 years, he has served in a variety of roles at St. Joseph’s/Candler.
He came to Tusculum because of the course delivery system in place at the time and the opportunity to participate in the football program. He was a member of the football team for three years and was involved in the athletic training program.
Winburn said the university provides an excellent framework for student-athletes to successfully balance rigorous academics with competitive sports.
“I would advise incoming students to discover what they are truly passionate about and commit themselves fully to pursuing those aspirations,” he said.
