Andrew Johnson National Cemetery is the final resting place of over 2,000 service members. It was first chosen to be the final resting place of Andrew Johnson and his family, along with his descendants and extended family members. In his eldest daughter’s will, Martha Johnson Patterson requested that the hill owned by the family, known as Monument Hill, would become a ‘park-like’ resting place for veterans after her passing. Her wish was honored and in 1909 the first burial took place in Andrew Johnson National Cemetery. The National Cemetery remained active until 2019 and veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, Iraqi Freedom, and Afghanistan are buried there.
Though being a federal holiday, Andrew Johnson National Historic Site and Andrew Johnson National Cemetery will be open Memorial Day, on May 25th, 2026. The historic site is open from 9AM – 4PM and the National Cemetery is open from dawn until dusk. We invite you to visit our park and the National Cemetery, and to remember those who gave their lives in service of the country on this day.
