A message from the Executive Director:

There are some announcements you know you need to make, but you still struggle to find the words.

This is one of them.

After seven years with Beyond Homeless, Inc., I have made the incredibly difficult decision to step down as Executive Director, effective November 1, 2026.

Ongoing health challenges have made it increasingly difficult for me to give this role, this organization, and this community the level of leadership and presence they deserve. While I know this is the right decision, it does not make it an easy one.

Because Beyond Homeless has never simply been a job to me.

It has been people. Relationships. Partnerships. Trust. And a community that has repeatedly shown what is possible when we choose to care for one another.

When I look back over these years, what I feel most is 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲.

I am grateful for a community that believed in this mission and stepped forward again and again.

For donors who trusted us with their resources.
For volunteers who gave their time and talents.
For churches, businesses, civic organizations, foundations, healthcare providers, social service agencies, and community leaders who became partners in this work.

For a Board of Directors that believed in what Beyond Homeless could become.

And for team members who have shown up to do work that is often difficult, complicated, exhausting, and deeply human.

Together, we have built relationships and partnerships that extend far beyond the walls of a shelter. We have created a network of people who understand that homelessness cannot be addressed by one organization alone. It takes a community willing to see people, recognize their dignity, and work together to create pathways toward stability.

I am incredibly proud of what 𝘄𝗲 have built.

But some of the relationships I will carry closest to my heart are with the individuals and families who trusted us during some of the hardest moments of their lives.

They allowed us to walk beside them—not simply offering a bed or assistance, but helping them rediscover their strengths, rebuild confidence, navigate barriers, and begin creating something more stable for themselves and their families.

That trust has been one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Over the next several weeks, I will remain fully committed to supporting our team and Board, strengthening continuity, and helping prepare Beyond Homeless for its next chapter.

And while my role is changing, my gratitude for this community is not.

Thank you for believing in Beyond Homeless.

Thank you for answering the phone when I called with another idea, another need, or another request for help.

Thank you for saying yes.

Thank you for showing up.

Thank you for trusting us.

And most importantly, thank you for believing that our neighbors experiencing homelessness deserve dignity, opportunity, compassion, accountability, and hope.

Beyond Homeless has grown because this community chose to grow with us.

Whatever accomplishments may be attached to my years here, they were never mine alone.

𝗪𝗲 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.

And I will forever be grateful that I had the privilege of being part of it.

𝟭𝟳 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲

That is how many people experiencing homelessness were identified in𝗣𝘂𝘁𝗻𝗮𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝘆 during Indiana’s 2026 Point-in-Time Count.

Some may look at that number and think it isn't significant.

𝗜𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀.

Rural homelessness is often difficult to see—and even harder to count.

People may be living in cars, moving from place to place, staying temporarily with others, or sleeping in buildings never intended to be homes. Many are simply trying to survive without drawing attention to their circumstances.

And a Point-in-Time Count is only a snapshot. It cannot capture everyone who experiences homelessness or housing instability throughout the year.

The 2026 Point in Time Count, held the last week of January across Indiana, resulted in 𝟱,𝟭𝟵𝟮 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀; a 7% increase from 2025. Even more concerning, prolonged or repeated homelessness has increased 𝟳𝟮% 𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟯.

Nearly 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻.

Yet 𝟯𝟴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗼 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿-𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗲𝗱𝘀.

These numbers point to a reality rural communities cannot afford to ignore: families are struggling, affordable housing is increasingly difficult to find, transportation and supportive services are limited, and a small number of organizations are often carrying an enormous responsibility.

We cannot measure the seriousness of homelessness by whether we see tents lining our streets.

𝗥𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁.

It is quieter.
It is scattered.
It is easier to overlook.

𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲.

The people counted in Putnam County are our neighbors—not statistics.

Their experiences should move us to strengthen prevention, expand access to emergency and supportive services, invest in housing solutions, and respond 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆.

Because no one in our community should have to become highly visible before their need becomes impossible to ignore.

We’re still smiling about this moment.

Watching this young man cross the finish line and win the Youth Division at the 2026 Flight for the Homeless 5K last Saturday was pure joy. We cheered. We celebrated. And we’ve been told he was so proud of that accomplishment that he refused to take his medal off for several days.

There’s something powerful about crossing a finish line you worked hard to reach.

At Beyond Homeless, we get to witness different kinds of finish lines, too.

We cheer just as loudly when a woman completes our shelter program and moves into stable housing—sometimes into a home of her own for the very first time.

We celebrate when she turns the key.
When her children finally have a place to call home.
When survival begins to give way to stability.
When she realizes, 𝙄 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙞𝙩.

𝘛𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘮𝘦𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘴.

𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘬𝘦𝘺𝘴. 🔑

And behind every one of those keys are people who believed the finish line was worth investing in.

𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲. They provide shelter, support, resources, guidance, and the opportunity for someone to keep moving forward until they reach a finish line that can change the course of their life.

Because everyone deserves someone cheering for them along the way.

And everyone deserves the chance to cross their own finish line.
