Housing...
It's more than just getting a job.
It's more than just a housing voucher or income based rent.
When we look at homelessness we have to look beyond simply thinking getting a job or receiving a housing voucher will solve the housing issues.
Individuals experiencing homelessness may also be living with untreated mental health conditions, substance abuse disorders, trauma, grief, or other behavioral health needs. A housing voucher, or income based housing can provide a door; but wrap around services can help someone remain successfully housed.
We need systems that connect people to:
- Professional behavioral health & substance abuse assessments.
- Mental Health and recovery services.
- Peer Recovery Specialists with lived experience.
- Case management and care coordination.
- Healthcare & benefit enrollment.
- Substance abuse treatment when appropriate.
- Employment and life skills support.
- Ongoing follow-up after housing placement.
The goal should not simply be "We housed them".
The goal should be "We housed them, connected them to care, and gave them the support and resources needdd to build and maintain stability".
Housing matters. Treatment matters. Support matters.
The entire person matters.
