6 Tips for Conversations with Someone in the Early Stages of Alzheimer’s or Other Forms of Dementia

Having conversations about healthcare wishes with people living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia and helping them have a say in their health care are important. And it is very important to do it earlier rather than later.

This blog from The Conversation Project has some ideas.

Conversations about what matters most to someone living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, understanding their values and wishes, and helping them have a say in their health care are important. What do you... more »

This Father’s Day, consider having a conversation about what matters most to him. Talking to your father about wishes for healthcare may not feel easy. What if they won't want to have these conversations or they are having a hard time getting started?

We want to remind you that this is okay. Don’t force or pressure someone into talking about what matters. There are ways to do this informally that might feel more comfortable. Sometimes the idea of one big conversation is overwhelming — instead, you can have a bunch of short conversations. Pay attention to your tone – this is a time to be gentle, curious, and humble.

CONGRATULATIONS GRADUATES!

If you're 18 or older, your parents can no longer automatically make healthcare or financial decisions for you. Now is the time to make sure you have designated decision makers if an accident happens, and you are unable to speak or make decisions for yourself.

All adults should have a legally designated healthcare representative, a financial power of attorney, and an executor.

World Caring Day is celebrated annually on June 7th. This day is a reminder to show love and care for others, and to recognize and celebrate the acts of caring that happen every day.

In recognition of this special day, PCHPCA wishes to shine a light on family caregivers and the care they provide for a loved one going through a health or aging journey. Feelings of being overwhelmed and isolated are prevalent among family caregivers. Join us in our efforts to surround them with support and help.

Barbara offers wise counsel to a woman whose father has put her in an awful position, instructing her not to tell her mother and sister that he has been given six months to live. I am sure he means well, but my heart breaks for this family.

What should you do when a parent is dying but refuses to tell the family? Barbara Karnes, RN discusses terminal illness, family secrets, end-of-life conversations, and how to navigate this difficult situation with compassion and honesty.
