We are Mankon. We are MACUDA AMERICA.

A people shaped by history, held together by community, and deeply conscious of the inheritance placed in our hands.

Our story lives in our language, our palace, our compounds, our music, our dances, our Atoghu, our food, our ceremonies and in that unmistakable way Mankon people recognize one another wherever life takes us.

We come from a culture where belonging carries responsibility. Where the wisdom of the elder matters. Where the child belongs to the community. Where another person’s joy can become everyone’s celebration, and another family’s burden can summon many hands.

This is the fabric from which we were made.

Today our people are scattered across Cameroon and throughout the world. We are doctors, teachers, entrepreneurs, engineers, artists, soldiers, scholars and professionals of every kind. Our children are being raised under different skies and encountering opportunities our ancestors could scarcely have imagined.

And still, the roots remain.

There is great wisdom in knowing that progress does not require the abandonment of identity. We can embrace the world without becoming strangers to ourselves. We can raise children who are global in their possibilities and deeply Mankon in their understanding of who they are.

Our culture is an inheritance, but inheritance also creates responsibility. What previous generations preserved for us must become something our generation strengthens and passes forward.

Let the language continue.

Let the drums continue.

Let the stories continue.

Let the children know the land, the people and the values behind the beautiful regalia they wear.

For generations before us carried Mankon until it reached our hands.

Now it is our turn.

One people. One village. One heritage. We are Mankon.

There are sounds that take you home before you even realize you have travelled.

The Mankon Bottle Dance is one of them.

Its story is as beautiful as its rhythm. Long before sophisticated instruments became common in Bamenda, our people made music with what was around them. In the palm w**e gathering places of old Mankon, bottles became instruments. Metal struck against glass created that unmistakable rhythm, voices joined in, feet answered, and over time the guitar found its place beside the bottles.

From those humble gatherings grew a sound that became one of the musical signatures of Mankon and the wider Bamenda Grassfields.

And there it was again at MACUDA America.

That familiar bottle rhythm. The guitar answering. Bodies moving almost instinctively. Elders recognizing a sound they have known for decades and another generation discovering why it still matters.

That is the beautiful thing about culture. It can grow, travel and meet new generations while still carrying the fingerprints of the people who created it.

Thousands of miles from Mankon, we danced to a rhythm born from the creativity of our own people.

The Bottle Dance is ours. It is Mankon. It is memory with rhythm.

And every time we play it, dance it and teach it to our children, another generation gets to hear what home sounds like.

There are moments that quietly tell you the future is going to be alright.

Watching this young man at the MACUDA America 2026 Convention in Baltimore was one of those moments for me.

Beautifully dressed in our traditional regalia, confident in every step, dancing with such freedom and pride, he carried something much bigger than himself. He carried a glimpse of the Mankon we hope will still be standing generations from now.

This is where the responsibility of parents in the diaspora becomes so important. Our children may be born and raised thousands of miles from Mankon, but distance should never make them strangers to their own inheritance.

Let them wear the Atoghu. Let them hear the drums. Teach them the language. Tell them the stories. Bring them around the elders. Let them understand our values, our customs and the meaning behind the things we celebrate.

Culture survives when it becomes familiar to our children.

And perhaps that is the greatest lesson I took from watching this young man dance. The future of Mankon will not be preserved simply by how proudly we remember our culture, but by how intentionally we place it into the hands of our children.

May they grow proudly American, proudly accomplished, and still deeply, unmistakably Mankon.

The future is watching us. Let us give them something worthy to carry.
