BizKidz

BizKidz After-school program for 3rd-5th grade students from Greenbelt, MD.

They ate healthy snacks, exercised, served their community, and raised money for field trips by starting & operating their own business selling bicycle-blended smoothies in 2016-2017. Proceeds from the business supported after-school activities of the Earth Squad, a homework and environmental education program in which many BizKidz participated.

Session 21: Cold out again, so we moved biz practice indoors again. And since we didn't have the bike on hand, we "cheated" and used a plug in blender. Thanks to two of our parents who dropped in and bought a smoothie!

BizKidz made and sold 37 smoothies at the Journey to Health & Fitness Fair on Sunday afternoon. Filling in for Kidz unable to attend were several 1st and 2nd graders who helped the show go on and did a great job. Sales of $185.00 netted the Kidz $135.19, bringing their total net to date to $266.31, or 67% of their $399 field trip fundraising goal. Just 36 smoothies shy, one more sales event could put them over the top!

Many thanks to the Coop for their $25 gift card donation today to help BizKidz buy smoothie ingredients! They also invited the Kidz to sell smoothies on their entrance ramp (date & time TBA)! A big thanks to Bob Davis and Joe Gareri at the Coop making this possible!

Session 20: Bike videos! We watched videos about Pedal People, a co-op hauling biz that collects and hauls garbage, compost, and even helps people move -- USING BICYCLE TRAILERS!; an Indian farmer who uses an old bike to pump water from a pond to irrigate his garden; a shop in Ghana that employees youth to build sturdy bike frames from bamboo; and even a thrilling 60 mph mountain descent by racing cyclists during a Tour de France. We then imagined all kinds of ways of using bikes to make a living and a difference.

We experimented with smoothie recipe measurements to improve taste, consistency and reduce waste. And we practiced using special color-coded paper strips test bacteria levels in the smoothie biz' washing station.
