Check out Aquilegia canadensis, a columbine native to Washington in the Native Garden. The Native Garden is just starting to wake up because it's shaded and doesn't get a lot of warm and sunlight.

It's a great place to hang out in the summer because it's always several degrees cooler in this garden. Plus, it has some fascinating, large-leafed plants that will be highlighted in the coming months.

Meet Easy Going and Julia Child. Both are floribunda roses, which were developed in the early 20th century by crossbreeding hybrid tea roses with polyantha roses, combining the elegance and color variety of hybrid teas with the hardiness and repeat-blooming nature of polyanthas.

The name “floribunda” is Latin for “many-flowering,” reflecting their characteristic clusters of flowers rather than a single bloom per stem

Learn about the Western Buttercup...

Welcome back to this week's Fun Fact Friday!
This week is about the native plant, the Western Buttercup. The Western Buttercup is an early-blooming plant source for early-season pollinators. Attracting pollinators in the early-blooming season makes it essential for crop growth. The bees are especially attracted to the bright, yellow blooms that are one of the first to appear in the spring. The Western Buttercup is perfectly adapted to the dry Pacific Northwest summers. After putting on a bright yellow display from March to May, the plant goes completely dormant in the heat of the summer, re-emerging in the fall. This makes the plant a great choice for wetland prairie restoration throughout its range. Its versatility enables it to thrive in moist upland or lowland sites, and it creates no competition for natural lawn restoration as well!
