October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Gold Coast Coin Club is proud to stand in solidarity with everyone affected by this disease. 🌸

Every journey represents incredible strength, resilience, and hope. This month, we honor the survivors, stand with the fighters, and remember the loved ones we’ve lost.

We encourage our club community to spread awareness, support early detection, and look out for one another. Together, we are stronger. 💕

Columbus Day, October 12

On this specific date, which coincided with the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus’s arrival in the Americas, the U.S. Mint struck the very first official United States commemorative coin: the Columbian Exposition Half Dollar. This groundbreaking issue completely transformed American coinage, giving birth to the rich tradition of U.S. commemorative numismatics that we still enjoy today.

----------
Here's an overview of this historic date and the coin it inspired, perfect for sharing at your next coin club presentation.

🌟 The Birth of U.S. Commemoratives

Before 1892, the United States Mint focused strictly on regular-issue circulating currency. Liberty, eagles, and allegorical figures dominated American pockets. However, to help fund the massive World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Congress authorized a special silver half dollar.

* The First Person on a U.S. Coin: When the first Columbian half dollars were struck, Christopher Columbus became the first actual historical person ever depicted on an official United States coin.

* The Design: The obverse features a bust of Columbus designed by Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber. The reverse, designed by George T. Morgan (of Morgan Dollar fame), beautifully depicts his flagship, the Santa María, positioned above two globes representing the Eastern and Western hemispheres.

📊 Mintages and the 1892 vs. 1893 Divide

Though the World’s Fair opened its doors in 1893, production began early to drum up excitement. This created a fascinating two-year type coin series:

* 1892: Approximately 950,000 coins were minted. Because they were the "first" year of issue, many were kept as souvenirs, making them relatively easy to find in higher grades today.

* 1893: Approximately 1.5 million coins were minted to meet fairground demand.

Attending a live coin auction is an exciting experience that combines hands-on lot inspection, the energy of live bidding, and direct networking with other numismatists.

Key Highlights of Live Coin Auctions

Tactile Inspection: You can physically examine coins, read surface luster, and spot cleaning or damage that online photos might hide.

The Atmosphere: The pre-auction buzz, fast-paced calling from the auctioneer, and banter among collectors create a unique social thrill.

Real-Time Strategy: Watching body language and reading the room helps you gauge competitor interest far better than staring at a digital screen.
