Valle Verde Rotary Club fact sheet

Rotary is a global network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers who see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change – across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Grassroots at the core, Rotary links 1.2 million members to form an organization of international scope. It started with the vision of one

man — Paul Harris. The Chicago attorney formed the Rotary Club of Chicago on 23 February 1905, so professionals with diverse backgrounds could exchange ideas, form meaningful, lifelong friendships, and give back to their communities. What we do
Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our 35,000+ clubs work together to:
1. Save mothers and children.
3. Fight disease including the eradication of Polio worldwide.
4. Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene.
5. Grow local economies.
6. Support the environment.
7. Promote peace. We work differently
•We see differently: Our multidisciplinary perspective helps us see challenges in unique ways.
•We think differently: We apply leadership and expertise to social issues — and find unique solutions.
•We act responsibly: Our passion and perseverance create lasting change.
•We make a difference at home and around the world: Our members can be found in your community and across the globe. Rotary’s local impact
Though Rotary is an international organization, clubs’ mostly focus their efforts on their local communities. Clubs typically focus on assisting children with their education & basic needs, but efforts within any of the seven areas mentioned above are welcome. Previous projects in our local communities include:
•Jazz in the Desert- fundraiser for music departments of I-19 area schools
•Angel Tree- Christmas gifts for children
•Genesis House- playground equipment for children at a local domestic violence shelter
•Birthday Books- literacy program providing free books for students of Continental & Sopori schools
•Fisher House- on-site living accommodations for families of patients at the VA hospital
•St. Andrew’s Clinic- specialized medical care for children from Mexico. Clinic in Nogales, AZ
•Dress for Success- shopping trip for school clothes for Sopori School students
•Warmth from the Heart- winter jacket giveaway in Amado, AZ
•Academic & vocational scholarships for graduating high school students
•Dictionary and Thesaurus for students at local schools

The Valle Verde Rotary Club’s impact:
Impact occurs two ways: Monetary donations to organizations (e.g., schools, foodbanks, & local non-profits) and performing service within the community, many times in partnership with the organizations mentioned above. Monetary: The club would identify fundraising activities to raise the funds to donate to the organizations. Service: Club members develop a project, either standalone or in conjunction with an organization, to implement a project that helps the community. Rotary’s Four-way Test of the Things we Think, Say or Do
Rotary began as a business networking group and developed a motto that guides all its actions. We think this is worthwhile whether or not someone is a Rotarian or in business. The Four-Way Test of the things we think, say, or do:
1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned? And our unofficial 5th rule: Is it FUN?

Donation in Honor of Tim Dugan: Carol Pfister’s club in Wisconsin has disbanded, and they donated their remaining funds, $5,000, to St. Andrew’s Family Clinic in honor of Tim Dugan. Valle Verde Rotary Foundation Chair Jim Rusk, along with Carol, presented Laura Romero, St. Andrews Director, a check totaling $7,080 that included other funds donated or raised by the club.

Laura reported the monthly family clinics are going strong. Around 40 families are seen for important medical care the first Thursday of every month. They have faced challenges with the families’ ability to cross the border in the last year. She shared that the Humanitarian permit fee was raised from $25 to $1,000 late last year. Through long standing relationships with CBP, they have been able to waive the fee for the last couple of months.
Last week, an agreement was signed with St. Andrews and the US and Mexican Consulates to work on getting passports and Visas for the families to make it easier for the Clinic to continue its great work.
Laura also reported they are gearing up for the Cleft Palate Clinic in Hermosillo, Mexico in early October

Valle Verde Community Grant aids Sopori Families

As part of the Valle Verde Rotary Club's Community Grant program, $500 was recently awarded to Women Who Care. This is a local organization of women who support Sopori School students. A plan to create a Resource Center for families of Sopori School students includes other organizations such as the Optimist Club, Elks Club and Borderlands UU. The Valle Verde Rotary Club has also been asked to be a partner in this project. The Resource Center will be stocked with personal hygiene items and clothing that will be available to students and families of Sopori School students. There will be no charge for items distributed to families and students upon their request.
At an organizational meeting, a need was expressed for underwear and socks for the children. This $500 Valle Verde Club community grant will help fulfill that specific need.

(L-R: VVRC member Char Gates, SUSD Student Services Ocean Attebery, VVRC members Jan Farrington & JoAnne Sapp)

This grant is one of six Community Grants awarded by Valle Verde Rotary this fall. The $500 grants are designed for small local projects and require club member involvement.
