✨ Have you met Princess Simpson Rashid?

A Jacksonville-based visual artist, inventor, and activist whose work bridges art and science through what she calls “controlled spontaneity.”

Back in 2019, she served as Artist-in-Residence at MOSH, where she created the interactive Wonder Wall installation. From exploring the periodic table through painting in Elemental Atmospheres to curating community-centered exhibitions, Rashid shows us how art can open doors to discovery and dialogue.

Like Augusta Savage, Princess Simpson Rashid is rooted in North Florida. She’s been a member of the Augusta Savage Exhibition Advisory Committee at the Cu**er Museum and continues her practice in Jacksonville’s CoRK Arts District.

“Art is the highest form of human expression that is in service to the elevation of the human spirit.” – Princess Simpson Rashid

Today’s lifts up a song of hope first sung by Donny Hathaway in 1973: “Someday We’ll All Be Free.” ✨
Here, Alicia Keys carries that torch with her own powerful live performance — reminding us that freedom, justice, and peace are promises worth holding onto.
In times of trial, these words still speak: Keep your head up, don’t let it get you down. Someday we’ll all be free.
What does this song stir in you? 💛

✨ Did you know Augusta Savage was one of the first Black women admitted to Paris’ prestigious Académie de la Grande Chaumière?

In 1929, Savage received a fellowship to study in France — a rare opportunity at a time when Black women faced countless barriers in the art world. Her time in Paris shaped her as an artist, but more importantly, it fueled her determination to open doors for others once she returned home.

Her story reminds us that talent knows no boundaries — and that community spaces for art and learning, like the one bearing her name today, continue her legacy of breaking barriers and lifting others up. 🎨✨

This week’s takes us back to 1974 with Reverend Al Green’s timeless classic “Take Me to the River.” 💧✨
Blending gospel spirit with soul groove, Al Green delivers a performance that feels like both a prayer and a celebration. His voice, drenched in emotion, bridges sacred and secular — reminding us how music can hold both worlds at once.
What’s your favorite Al Green song that always moves you? 🎶💜

✨ Have you heard of the Florida Highwaymen?

A courageous group of 26 self-taught artists, mostly from Fort Pierce in North Florida, who painted vibrant, impressionistic landscapes and sold them directly from the trunks of their cars during the segregation era. Denied access to galleries, they defiantly forged their own path, using “fast-painting” techniques and roadside sales to sustain their craft and their families.

Their work wasn’t just art -- it was resilience, resourcefulness, and a quiet act of resistance under Jim Crow.

Renowned for their resourcefulness, speed and creativity, a group of Florida artists known as the Highwaymen employed a unique painting style as a way to assert their economic independence and agency during and after the segregation era.
