Met two hikers on the Pioneer Trail in Jennings State Forest, Lauren & Noah. Both of them were preparing for a hike on the AT trail and were using the elevation changes of the Pioneer trail to train with their gear. It was nice to stop and chat with them for a while and discuss some of the lessons they have learned while hiking.

I also met a couple who were training their cats so they could hike with them, unfortunately I didn’t take a picture to capture their efforts. Sometimes the folks I encounter on the trail are as interesting as the nature I see.

Long post alert! It’s important! Did you know we have mountains in Florida? Unfortunately they a Gypsum Stacks. Mountains of radioactive waste left over from the fertilizer industry. We have a few dozen here in Florida. That scenic lake on top? That’s toxic water containing toxins and heavy metals (more than one ecological disaster has resulted from the contents of those lakes entering into the aquifer or our waterways). Rather than clean then up some mining operations have left them there until they went out of business. The right thing would be the mining industry cleaning up their mess. Instead they are greenwashing with a Phosphate Innovation campaign trying to get signatures to “clean up” the gyp stacks. That involves trying to use them for materials in roadways instead of cleaning it up themselves (something the EPA has prohibited because long term exposure could result in cancer). Now the effort has reached the house in the form of HB1191, where they phosphate industry is attempting to get their foot in the door trying to get this toxic waste used in road constructions. photo credit: https://www.sierraclub.org/florida/blog/2021/03/tell-epa-regulate-radioactive-gypsum-stacks

One problem with free range chickens is that they can lay eggs wherever they please. Sometimes it’s in my old tractor, which results in inventory losses when I use it.
