Lower Fox River Watershed Monitoring Program

Lower Fox River Watershed Monitoring Program Established in 2003. The LFRWMP provides opportunities for authentic science learning. In the spring and summer students conduct amphibian and bird surveys.

We are a network of high school teachers, middle school teachers, and students in NE Wis collaborating with UW-Green Bay to do long-term stream monitoring, education, data collection and research on Lower Fox River tributaries. Project Overview:
The Lower Fox River Watershed Monitoring Program (LFRWMP) is a network of teachers and students from high schools in Northeast Wisconsin collaborating o

n a long-term watershed monitoring and education program. Our program combines watershed education with the collection of top quality scientific data through the cooperation of teachers, students, university scientists, businesses, governmental agencies and community groups. Our students take on the role of scientists and explore local streams and waterways, in partnership with the scientific community. The leadership of UW-Green Bay and community partners assures high-quality results. This collaboration among students and experts creates a rich resource of information throughout the Fox River Basin. Our vision is to foster scientifically literate citizens that work together within businesses, industries, institutions and government to enhance the economic and social well-being of our community by protecting our most valuable natural assets, the Fox-Wolf River Basin and Bay of Green Bay. Program Activities
We regularly monitor seven streams for water quality, habitat assessment, and biotic index. Eleven schools and the Green Bay Boys & Girls Club participate in our program and currently 17 teachers and over 80 students are involved in the project. Our data is available online to scientists and agencies. For example, Brown County is currently using our data to measure the success of rural stream buffers on downstream water quality. Our teachers participate in annual teacher training workshops where they learn directly from scientists and they enhance their ability to teach watershed science. Each year, our work culminates in a one-day Watershed Symposium held at UW-Green Bay. The symposium provides an opportunity for student-teacher teams, program partners, agency representatives, and community members to exchange ideas and share research findings with panel discussions, posters and presentations

Over the past decade, the LFRWMP has successfully emerged as a shining educational star involving the successful collaboration of UW-Green Bay, area high schools, and community partners. This collaboration, in turn, has shown potential to make valuable contributions to regional environmental protection and public policy. The educational benefits of the project are obvious, but these wider applications set the program apart from most other innovative educational initiatives. In the next decade, our opportunity and challenge is to maximize our impact. Program Sponsor
Arjo Wiggins, Ltd., Appleton, WI has funded major program activities since program inception in 2003 through 2013. The current cost to implement our program is $100,000 per year. Program Website

The movie premiere of 'The Natural World of the Bay' by film maker Dan Larson was well received by a sell out crowd at UW-Green Bay on Earth Day. The funds raised were an amazing gift to the Lower Fox River Watershed Monitoring Program to continue to get students out into our watershed. Thank you Dan for your work.

The Natural World of the Bay film documentary is finished and will premiere at the University of Wisconsin in Green Bay on April 22nd at 6pm in University Theater. The film lasts 59 minutes and ticket sale proceeds will benefit the University’s water programs. I was fortunate to find a lot of great biologists and water experts and told their stories that ranged across the entire Bay of Green Bay. Organizations represented are the Wisconsin DNR, Michigan DNR, Sea Grant, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, UW Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences, NOAA, NEW Water, and professors and graduates from UW Green Bay. My friend, Dan Weaver, composed the original music score and it is outstanding. It was a fun 3 ½ year adventure. In May the documentary will be added to the films that run at The Mulva Cultural Center in De Pere. I’ll also give the documentary to PBS Wisconsin should they wish to air it. The UW ticket reservation website address is: https://host.nxt.blackbaud.com/registration-form/...
Additional information about the Green Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve can be found at https://www.uwgb.edu/nerr/

With a Bay of Green Bay NERR designation, we’ll be able to offer a coordinating force to manage, restore and protect our region.

The 19th Annual Lower Fox River Watershed Student Symposium was a great success on Wednesday, March 18th on the UW-Green Bay campus. 2025 Freshwater high school scholars presented their posters, water monitoring teams presented their research from around the watershed, and afternoon sessions gave students experience with microplastics and bird banding. Thanks to all of the schools that attended.

Thanks to the Wisconsin and Michigan professionals that made our UW-Green Bay Freshwater Educator Winter Workshop L.H. Barkhausen Waterfowl Preserve on Jan 19th a huge success. Educators got to hold a sea lamprey (!), experience classroom activities, and receive updates on current aquatic invasive species. A special shout out to Amanda Smith, WI DNR, Andrea Stromeyer, Door Co Maritime Museum, Lauren Holbrook, Great Lakes Fishery Commission, and Emily Tyner and Chris Bory, UW-Green Bay.

Such an amazing workshop today! We got to listen to a variety of speakers in a wide range of roles and what they do to help manage the spread of invasive species in the Great Lakes. A lot of the speakers had additional materials they sent us home with, and I now own a model Sea Lamprey😅
Highlight of the day was networking with individuals in the field and learning about other ways to get involved locally with the prevention of the spread of AIS. Oh, and I also got to touch inside of a Sea Lamprey’s mouth!
A HUGE Thank you to Lynn Terrien for helping me get back into this field and for always having new opportunities for me to be a part of😄 I can’t wait to continue to contribute to these amazing projects!
