🌿 Exciting News! 🌿

We’re thrilled to share that the proposed 2027 budget includes a one-time investment in the Brown County Community Gardens Program! Plans include improvements at select garden sites, expanded garden plots, and the potential for a new garden location.

We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our gardeners, volunteers, partners, and community leaders who help our gardens thrive. We can’t wait to see how we can continue growing, improving, and strengthening our community together.

🌱 Every Garden Plot Has a Story 🌱

At MacArthur Community Garden, Sid's plot is much more than a place to grow vegetables. It's a connection to family, culture, and cherished memories.

For Sid, gardening is a way to reconnect with the spirit of his grandmother, Josefa, while honoring his Oneida heritage through heirloom seeds and traditional crops. As a child, he gardened alongside his grandmother and cousins, even selling the tomatoes they grew together on 9th Street. Today, he continues that legacy by planting traditional varieties of beans and corn and preserving seeds passed down through generations.

Through his connection to the Oneida community and a friend named Bill, Sid has access to seeds that can be traced back more than 100 years. Some of those same seeds have been growing in his garden for the past three to four years, carrying history forward with each season.

But for Sid, gardening is about more than what grows in the soil. It's about community.

"I hope to continue to meet people and have great conversations," Sid shares. "There is such a diverse group of people and families that have a ton of different gardening styles that are willing to share."

A Garden Full of Stories, Culture, and Community 🌶️

Tucked away on Green Bay's west side, the MacArthur Community Garden is more than just 32 garden plots. It's a space where nearly 30 families come together to grow fresh food, share traditions, and build community.

Take a stroll through the garden and you'll find everything from vibrant zinnias and fragrant rosemary to colorful eggplant, peppers, red beets, and Brussels sprouts. Every plant has a story, and every plot reflects the unique experiences and cultures of the gardeners who care for it. 🍆

Whether you're a lifelong gardener or simply enjoy seeing what grows in our community, there's something here to discover.

🌱💚 Thank You, Angela! 💚🌱

As Angela Sparks' time as a Community Garden Assistant comes to an end, the impact she made on the Brown County Community Gardens will be felt for years to come. From helping gardeners, sharing her knowledge, and keeping our gardens thriving, Angela brought enthusiasm, hard work, and a passion for growing that made a difference every day.

Angela joined us with a background in organic vegetable farming and quickly became an invaluable part of the team. She loved connecting with gardeners, working outdoors, and helping create spaces where community members can grow their own food and build connections.

"This program gives Brown county residents an awesome opportunity to grow their own food without needing the space at their own home to do so. There are many different types of living situations that one could have, but the garden program ties it all together with giving people a safe space to effectively grow crops of their choice." 🌱

We're grateful for all she contributed and excited that this opportunity helped lead her to a permanent position with Brown County. 🎉

Thank you, Angela, for helping our gardens and community grow! We wish you the very best in your next chapter. 🌻

A Garden Plot, A New Beginning 🫑

When Feuba and his family moved to Green Bay from Africa, they were looking for ways to connect with their new community. After Glory (Feubas Wife) met Debra, Brown County's Community Gardens Coordinator, they learned that a garden plot had just become available and quickly claimed it.

Today, that plot is filled with peppers grown to nourish family and share with others in need. 🌶️

Stories like Rophin's show how community gardens do more than grow food. They cultivate connections, create a sense of belonging, and bring neighbors together. We're proud to welcome new families throughout the season whenever space is available! 🌱

Fresh from the garden and into the community! 🫑🌿

Green beans, basil, zucchini, peppers, and more were recently donated from the Brown County Jail Garden Program to Altrusa Hospitality House. Diane Leibham, Organizational Operations Specialist, shared that guests appreciate the opportunity to prepare their own meals using fresh ingredients.

Through the gardening program, participants gain valuable skills, grow fresh produce, and give back to the community in a meaningful way.

Do you see it? 👀

Is your garden near a forest or wooded area? Have you ever heard a loud trill coming from the trees? If so, a well-camouflaged Gray Treefrog might be hiding among your plants!

These fascinating frogs, which typically grow to about 1.25 to 2 inches long, can change color depending on temperature and surroundings, much like a chameleon.

We spotted this little visitor on some of the spicy pepper plants from our Mid-Season Plant Giveaway. Apparently, the heat doesn't bother this frog! 🌶️🐸

Have you ever spotted a Gray Treefrog? What kinds of frogs have you seen around your garden or home? Let us know in the comments! ⬇️
