Well, folks… It’s been quite a journey. We’re so grateful for all of those who’ve taken it with us. We’re now all at the airport in Nairobi… We have three different teams, transferring through Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam. Please keep us in our prayers with travel mercies! If you would ever be interested in joining us for a trip… Please get a hold of Jill, Chris, or Bruce! This isn’t your typical African Safari trip… But if you have a heart for an educational mission… and want to meet some amazing young people who will change your life… And still have some fun Safari and other experiences - we would love to talk to you about how you can join us on future trips!!!

Our driver shared this traditional Kenyan welcome song with us on our first days on the trip. Marie took it upon herself to learn all the words. When we arrived at Kobe Beads this was their welcome song for us and she joined right in!

Day sixteen - Preparing to go home!!! We have loved our time in Kenya….but we know it is time to head home! But one more adventure before our late evening flight. We headed to Kobe Beads to learn how a co-op of women working with Masai tribes is helping provide economic stability for many many families. These ladies make the beads, dry them, glaze them, fire them in the kiln, and then make beautiful necklaces, wallhangings, bracelets, keychains, and more! We had fun doing some shopping too! Afterward, we had a relaxing lunch at the Lovebirds Garden Café. Then back to the hotel for our final packing and getting ready to get in the van one last time.

Day Fifteen - public holiday and a Nairobi Safari! Monday was a public holiday celebrating achieving self rule in Kenya. So we went on Safari to Nairobi National game park. We were in the van by 5:30 AM and at the gate at 6 AM when it opened. We were rewarded with seeing rhinos and hippos and antelope and ostriches and so much more… As we wind down and get ready to head back to the United States we had a nice casual dinner at Trattoria in Italian restaurant in downtown Nairobi.

Day Fourteen - Graduate Networking Day!

We had an outstanding turnout for our Nairobi graduate networking day. Thanks to Hilda, Fanon, Gladwell, and Ann for coordinating. We had over 40 graduates participate! They were able to share advice between more experienced and younger graduates and create connections for future mentoring! Thank you to everyone who participated!

And they presented a check to KenyaHELP for 49,000 shillings ($380 USD) to help support our high school students scholarships. Every year our graduates do a service project on December 27 and they each pitch in however many shillings they can afford in order to purchase some supplies for the Service project. This year they got more money than they needed for the project, and decided that they would like to help sponsor some of our students! We are so grateful for our graduates being willing to continue to invest in the next generation of KenyaHELP students.

Day Thirteen - a morning of cats and camels, a lunch in a treehouse, then the loooong drive back to Nairobi!

On our last day, we split into two teams, early safari team (6am departure) and the late sleepers (8am departure). The early team was rewarded with sightings of lions, a cheetah, and a young LEOPARD! (Quite a coup!). The late team saw over 100 camels being taken to market walking down the road!!! Both were great adventures! We met up for lunch at the Trout Tree restaurant! We had delicious food in a peaceful and cool treehouse…. Then the long drive back to Nairobi. Since it was Saturday, the traffic was not as bad as we feared! We were relieved to get back to our hotel for a small dinner and rest!

Day Twelve - another day another game drive. The team was up before 6 AM getting ready to head out for a game drive. While we saw fewer different types of animals today we did see interesting groupings. There was a herd of over 30 elephants. There was a group of zebras and giraffes. And the cutest group of warthogs you ever saw. We got to spend the afternoon by the pool and then had a sunset celebration sitting on rocks overlooking the river. We’ve had a wonderful safari! Tomorrow, we’ll do a game drive on our way out of the lodge on our way to Nairobi and hopefully stop at a good restaurant for lunch. We’re excited to see many of our graduates on Sunday for our annual graduate networking day in Nairobi!

Day eleven - Safari! It was an early morning… With the intent to get to the game reserve when it opened at 6 AM. In addition to our two vans with the mission team members - our guide, Bundi, offered an opportunity for some of our graduates to go to the game park as well. We would join them for the better part of the morning and then they would go one direction and we would head to the lodge. We ended up saying goodbye at a swimming hole on the game reserve… We saw a lot of animals today! And it’s definitely a little hotter in Samburu than it was in May.

Day Ten - Farewell Dinner at the Thiiri. After nine days, it’s time to say goodbye to our wonderful hosts at the Thiiri Center. We had a very special dinner with a bonfire down by the pool. And it was pizza! The Thiiri team shared their heartfelt thanks for our continued support for them, but we are equally indebted to them for their generosity and support. And now we get ready for Safari!

Day ten - women’s textile co-op! After the momentous hike to the waterfall, Jill and Chris join the team at the McKenna Womens textile co-op. This co-op has been around for decades and was instrumental in helping women use their skills such as creating yarn and weaving rugs and dying fabrics to help make money for their families. We found some fantastic rugs that will just fit in our suitcases!
