After achieving her doctorate in ecology, Vicki began her professional career as associate director of UW-Green Bay's Cofrin Center for Biodiversity. For more than 12 years, she has generously volunteered her time and expertise for New Leaf Foods, helping to establish their Garden Blitz program and their collaborative project, the Brown County Seed Library. Having researched the best seeds to purchase for UW-Green Bay's heirloom plant sale for over two decades, the staff at New Leaf appreciate how much of an asset she is to the seed library team.
The Garden Blitz program installs raised bed gardens at shelters, pantries, schools, parks, libraries, and subsidized and family housing. Because space in raised beds is at a premium, Vicki has shared lessons she’s learned through many years of trial and error to get the most out of these tiny plots. She has taught about soil mixes, selecting seed and plant varieties, germination, and genetics. This helps home gardeners optimize space, maximize productivity, and minimize disease and pests.
Vicki teaches that good food does not originate on the grocery shelf. Rather, it begins in seeds and soil, on farms, and in people’s and cultures’ knowledge of how food is grown, prepared, and shared. She believes that education rooted in good food and a clean environment is foundational to building a healthier, more resilient future for all.
