It is with great sadness that the Green Bay Police Department announces the passing of K-9 Pyro on Tuesday, September 8, 2026.
For more than eight years, Pyro loyally served the Green Bay community alongside his handler and partner, Officer Salzmann. Throughout his remarkable career, Pyro served as a valued member of our SWAT Team, helped detect illegal drugs, apprehended dangerous subjects, and stood beside officers during some of the most challenging and dangerous moments of their careers.
Pyro's courage became known far beyond the Green Bay Police Department when he was seriously injured after being stabbed in the line of duty in 2019.
True to the spirit he demonstrated throughout his career, Pyro fought through his injuries and persevered through a long recovery. His bravery and resilience touched our entire community and brought an incredible outpouring of support for Pyro, Officer Salzmann, and the Green Bay Police Department.
That support was felt deeply, and we are especially grateful to the Bark’N Blue Foundation and everyone in the community who rallied around Pyro during his recovery journey. Your generosity, encouragement, and love for Pyro meant more than words can express.
While Pyro was a courageous police K-9 and an incredible working partner, he also enjoyed a good belly rub and attention from his human partners.
The bond between Officer Salzmann and Pyro was built through years of service, trust, challenge, and loyalty. They faced difficult moments together, protected one another, and shared a partnership that extended far beyond that of a handler and his K-9. Pyro was always there when Officer Salzmann and our officers needed him.
Today, we remember Pyro not only for the work he did, but for the courage he showed, the lives he helped protect, and the lasting impact he had on our department and community.
Rest easy, Pyro. Your watch is over, but your legacy will never be forgotten.
Thank you for your service, your courage, your loyalty, and, most of all, for being our partner.
