The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources asked for Public Comment by July 17th. Well, you just got it.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, in collusion with the illegitimate "Wisconsin Composting Council," just declared war on backyard composters, small-scale Community Composters, and farmers interested in composting food waste from off-site, with their latest Proposed Permanent Rules surrounding Solid Waste in Wisconsin.

Rather than take our advice and craft rules that would promote MORE food waste composting in the State and make it EASIER for more people to start and run successful Community Composting operations in Wisconsin (like we do), the DNR and the backstabbing Benedict Arnolds at the "Wisconsin Composting Council" have decided to craft rules that disincentivize the composting of food waste, raise the costs of starting or running small-scale composting operations (to the point where they may be entirely unviable), make composting of off-site food waste so burdensome for farmers that they won't even want to get into the industry, and hand a big, fat non-monetary subsidy/gift to large-scale composters like Purple Cow, whose primary focus isn't even the composting of food waste (amd who don't need the help), and composters whose operations are entirely indoors (when no such composters even exist in Wisconsin).

The Wisconsin DNR's Proposed Permanent Rules around composting will have a chilling effect on food waste composting and Community Composting in the State, and their adoption would be tantamount to the State shooting itself in the foot (if not the HEAD), with respect to its food waste reduction goals.

If the DNR is smart/not run by complete morons, they will rethink these counterproductive and ignorant Rules long before they come close to adopting them.

And to think...we've all waited nearly 20 years for these Ruies to be updated, only for them to be Proposed to be updated in the most low-IQ way possible.

After much careful thought and consideration, we at Greener Bay Compost have made the difficult decision to pull out of , which means that in the very near future, we will no longer be serving the people of the City of Neenah with our Fox Cities Area Compost Pickup Services (www.GBCompost.com/FoxCities).

This decision is being made because, since our expansion into Neenah in August of 2025, only one household within the City (a City of over 27,000 people) has signed up with us. That said, we can, unfortunately, no longer justify serving Neenah.

We are sorry to have to inform everyone of this development. Rest assured that we worked very hard to promote our services in Neenah, including reaching out to local government and the City's Sustainable Neenah Committee, in an attempt to drum up support for our mission, but that, ultimately, our attempt failed to generate the route density or subscriber base necessary for us to continue serving Neenah.

We have enjoyed serving Neenah since the summer of 2025 and are sad that we will no longer be doing so come July of this year. Thank you to the one Neenah resident who signed up with us for making sustainability such a huge priority in your life and for supporting our mission to keep food waste out of your local landfill(s) over the last near-year. You made a very big, positive difference for your community and beyond, and we appreciate it, even if the rest of your fellow residents perhaps do not/did not.

For the record, for us to return to Neenah, the City of Neenah, Wisconsin Government would need to publicly promote the existence of our services (on their website and social media) and partially subsidize them the way the City of De Pere does our Green Bay area service for their residents, to help create the route density necessary for us to justify serving the City.

We encourage Neenah residents to reach out to the Sustainable Neenah Committee and their local Alder/Mayor's office to encourage them to support our mission and the valuable work we do, and to encourage their fellow Neenah residents to do the same (assuming they would like us to return, when/if the City decides to sustainability more seriously).

More than 500 people filled an Eau Claire event center Saturday evening to drink old fashioneds while connecting over a collective desire to prevent “oligarchs” and big tech companies from constructing AI data centers in the region.

“For us the land really matters,” Cyndi Greening, the leader of Chippewa Valley Indivisible, said. “This is where we swim and play and raise our kids. I think it’s a bigger issue here, because a lot of us are much more tied to the land.”

Hundreds of people met at an Eau Claire event venue Saturday to organize a regional effort for anti-data center activism.

They want to lower the amount of money Oracle — and future data center operators — would need to put up for collateral for new projects if they don’t meet the highest credit rating thresholds.

The move has drawn criticism from environmental groups and ratepayer advocates, who say loosening the protections could leave families and small businesses shouldering financial risks of artificial intelligence data centers.

We Energies and a pair of data center developers are asking state regulators to loosen financial protections included in a new special rate structure for data centers.

In recent days, we have learned that there is a lot of confusion out there about why we at Greener Bay Compost may not accept certain types of flowers for composting, so we are making this post to clear the air on this issue. 💐

Per our List of Acceptable and Not Acceptable Materials for Composting at www.GBCompost.com/List, we absolutely except flowers, generally speaking, however, we do NOT accept them if they're painted, dipped, dyed, or covered in glitter (microplastics). Flowers that are covered in paint or plastic belong in the trash. 🚮

The telltale sign, by the way, that flowers have been painted or artificially colored is that the unnatural color on their petals has bled onto their stems. The photos of some flowers in this post are an example of this. 🌸

What makes dealing with flowers tricky for us and our Residential Compost Pickup Service subscribers (www.GBCompost.com/Residential) is that painted flowers are often included on store-bought bouquets with non-painted flowers. That said, both we and our subscribers need to be very vigilant when dealing with flowers, and when in doubt as to whether they're painted or not, throw them out, not in Greener Bay Compost buckets or backyard compost! 🚫

Other contaminants we deal with, attached to flowers, are green floral foam (extremely toxic!), plastic stem "straws"/supports, and metal wire or plant tags. All of these materials should be tossed in the trash also! 🗑
