8th grade English I students at C.E. Murray Middle School celebrated Haitian Flag Day by tabling during their lunch break for their peers. In preparation for this day, students analyzed various informational texts about the Haitian revolution, including an essay by Mumia Abu Jamal, and resources from Black Alliance for Peace on the ongoing occupation of Haiti. Here are some photos from our really beautiful African Liberation Day commemoration in Lane today. Thank you so much to everyone who helped our students make this an ALD to remember! And thank you to everyone who came to hear them present what they have learned about the struggle of FRELIMO in Mozambique over Portuguese colonialism and why it's important that African people all around the world continue to struggle against neocolonialism. I am sooooooooo proud of them! The fly gear they're in are special gifts from Naija & Gullah Geechee African Collections. Look them up on Facebook!
