🔶CAHEC STAFF HIGHLIGHT🔶

Introducing - Wendy Abbott - Compassionate Care Training Specialist

After enjoying a long career in non-profit fundraising and marketing, Wendy made a conscious decision to travel a new path advocating for those experiencing Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Her mother lived with Alzheimer’s disease for more than a decade. Wendy has spent years learning about effective caregiving both through personal experience, and through formal training and education.

Prior to her role with Centennial AHEC, she spent nearly two years as a group facilitator delivering an educational program to older adults to promote healthy aging. This research project, funded by the National Institute on Aging through the Colorado State University, ADAPT Lab, led her to pursue a graduate certificate in gerontology. Her studies have provided insight on aging and approaches for better care and support for those contending with Alzheimer’s and other dementias.

Wendy is an Alzheimer’s Association volunteer community educator presenting topical information to an array of audiences. She hosts a monthly support group for caregivers in the sandwich generation and is part of the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Additionally, she volunteers with residential care facilities assisting residents with dementia and providing music enrichment along with her daughters. She also co-facilitates a monthly memory café for people with dementia and their care partners.

By 2025, an estimated 92,000 Coloradans will be living with Alzheimer’s disease. Ensuring health professionals are well-equipped to successfully care for this population, as well as promote prevention and early diagnosis is critical. Wendy is thrilled to be part of the progress in this area through her work with Centennial AHEC.

Labor Day is all about celebrating the workforce, and the best way to honor hard work is to take a real break from it. So to celebrate, our team is fully committing to the cause by penciling some cat naps into our schedules this weekend.

A quick heads-up: The office is closed on Monday, September 7th. We will be back on Tuesday, September 8th — recharged, refreshed, and ready to get to work.

We hope you have a long weekend full of good food, good company, and zero emails!

You are not alone, and help is always within reach.

September is Su***de Prevention Month. Warning signs can include:
🔹 Withdrawing from friends and family
🔹Talking about feeling hopeless or like a burden
🔹Noticeable changes in mood or sleep.

If you see these in someone you love, ask directly and listen without judgment. That conversation matters more than finding perfect words.

We're grateful for partners like North Range Behavioral Health and Su***de Education, 988 and Support Services (SESS), who serve our communities every day.

If you or someone you know is struggling, call or text 988 anytime, and find regional mental health support at cahec.org/mental-health.

Caring for a person living with dementia is a meaningful journey that can bring both rewards and challenges for caregivers and families. In this webinar, Oakwood Creative Care will highlight how its Alzheimer's Disease Programs Initiative (ADPI) grant from the Administration for Community Living (ACL) is expanding innovative caregiver support services that foster resilience, emotional well-being, and meaningful connections.

Presenters will provide an overview of Oakwood Creative Care's mission, the communities it serves across Arizona, and its expanded commitment to supporting caregivers of people living with dementia. Participants will learn about Resilient Together, Oakwood's six-week support program designed to help caregivers, care partners and families build resilience through emotional support, grief resources, practical guidance, and opportunities for connection.

Through real-world examples and case studies, attendees will explore how resilience-based approaches can empower caregivers, strengthen family relationships, enhance well-being, and help families navigate the dementia journey with greater confidence and support.
