Great info from one of our Deconstruction partners!

When deadlines are tight and margins are thin, it’s tempting to hire the lowest-bid demolition contractor and move on. But for residential general contractors in Denver, the cheapest option often ends up costing more — in time, oversight, and risk. At Perks Deconstruction, we work with GCs every...

Stick with me on this one. I wanted to explain our Deconstruct program with our vocational education nonprofit, National Center for Craftsmanship, in more detail since I get ask a great deal about the following:

Deconstruction vs. Demolition: Which to Choose?

When considering property redevelopment or site clearance, two primary methods come into play: deconstruction and demolition. While both clear a residential or commercial site for future use, deconstruction can provide a much larger financial benefit. Deconstruction, the careful dismantling of structures to salvage materials, is the more sustainable, economical, and community-friendly choice. Here’s a breakdown of deconstruction vs. demolition.

What is Demolition?

Demolition is the traditional method of tearing down buildings with heavy machinery, such as wrecking balls, bulldozers, and explosives. While this method can clear a site quickly, its numerous downsides often outweigh its speed and efficiency.

The Downsides of Demolition:

Environmental Damage: Demolition generates vast amounts of waste, much of which ends up in landfills, contributing significantly to negative environmental effects.

Loss of Valuable Materials:
During demolition, materials that could be reused, refurbished, or recycled are destroyed, leading to unnecessary resource waste.

Community Disruption:
Demolition noise, dust, and vibrations can be highly disruptive to surrounding communities and businesses.

Missed Economic Opportunities: By opting for demolition, property owners miss out on the potential tax deductions from donating salvaged materials, which offset project costs and the loss of potential in valuable LEED points.

What is Deconstruction?

Deconstruction involves carefully dismantling a building piece by piece with the aim of salvaging as many materials as possible for reuse or recycling. This approach offers a surplus of environmental, economic, and social benefits.

Advantages of Deconstruction:

Environmental Benefits: Deconstruction drastically reduces waste sent to landfills and promotes the reuse and recycling of building materials. This not only conserves natural resources but also significantly lowers the project’s environmental footprint.

Economic Benefits: Salvaged materials can be donated, repurposed, or recycled, creating additional revenue streams through tax benefits. These materials often have high value, which can offset the initial costs of the deconstruction process.

Educational Benefits: NCC trains students in construction by deconstructing. Students learn valuable skills that can be applied for a lifetime.

Job Creation and Community Enhancement:

Deconstruction creates more job opportunities than demolition. It supports local economies and can be part of broader community revitalization efforts, job training, and promoting sustainable development practices.

Reduced Community Impact:

Deconstruction is less disruptive than demolition, causing less noise, dust, and vibration, thereby minimizing the negative impact on surrounding communities.

Why Deconstruction is the Better Choice

Deconstruction offers a far more advantageous approach compared to demolition, aligning with green values of sustainability, economic efficiency, and giving back to the community. Although the initial costs of deconstruction might appear higher due to upfront costs, the ability to write off the final estimated donation amount allows for potential cash savings. Further, the donation value of salvaged materials often compensates for these costs. In many cases, deconstruction is more cost-effective than demolition when considering the full project lifecycle.

The benefits of deconstruction with National Center for Craftsmanship are clear and compelling in the debate of deconstruction vs. demolition. Deconstruction promotes environmental sustainability, provides better economic advantages, and supports community well-being, and trains vocational education students. National Center for Craftsmanship is happy to walk you through what your project would look like by choosing deconstruction.

NCC delivered another ton of donated wood!! This load went to Poudre High School in Fort Collins,CO. for their vocational education programs.

This brings NCC up to 56 tons of wood materials repurposed from NCC Deconstruct projects, and companies with usable materials they considered scrap. It was all usable wood diverted from landfills and into the hands of vocational education students.
