Solar Sister training for entrepreneurs benefits them beyond their clean energy business.

"With the aid of Solar Sister's training, I was able to grow on a personal level," John shares. "Now, I feel much more at ease when talking to people, and my confidence has significantly improved."

Why Women?
Women think about their families, fellow women, and their communities when they find an opportunity that affects them. They share opportunities and create a multiplier effect wherever they go.

Women are trusted members of their communities and often understand local energy needs firsthand.

By investing in women entrepreneurs, Solar Sister expands access to clean energy while creating sustainable economic opportunities that benefit families and communities.

September’s training module focused on Everyday Sales Excellence and Customer Care.

Entrepreneurs explored how strong customer service goes beyond making a sale. They learned how honesty, trust, and continued support can strengthen customer relationships, build loyalty, and encourage repeat business.

The training helped shift the focus toward understanding and supporting customers as an important part of building a successful business.

This past month, we have shared stories about our women entrepreneurs' courage and grit and how they have shown it in different ways and impacted their families and communities.

That grit shows up as determination. Determination turns into action for their families, their businesses, and their communities.

Like many Solar Sister Entrepreneurs, Taibat Zakariyah, an SSE in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, is planning for her children’s future. One of the first things women often do when they begin earning their own income is invest in their children, and especially in their education.

At Solar Sister, we’re proud to see how women’s clean energy businesses can create opportunities that reach the next generation.

As Climate Week ended last week, the conversations around energy, impact, and action closely reflected the work Solar Sister does every day.

Every solar lamp a Solar Sister Entrepreneur distributes brings clean energy to a family. As women entrepreneurs reach more customers, that impact spreads through their communities.

This is climate action, local, practical, and led by women.

As Climate Week in NYC wraps up this weekend, we’re reflecting on lessons from Solar Sister’s 2024 Climate Resilience Project in Nigeria. One important takeaway:
Climate Resilience means helping women regain economic agency after a shock, not simply responding to the immediate disaster.

The project supported 50 women affected by severe flooding with startup inventory, business training, mentorship, and digital tools. Within eight months, they distributed more than 2,000 clean energy products, improving energy access for more than 8,000 people in flood-affected communities.

• On average, participants sold 6.7 times Solar SIster's initial inventory investment
• Former Nigeria Country Director Chioma Ome with some of the participants

With Kenya expecting El Niño rains to begin in October and potentially continue through the end of 2026, the Solar Sister Kenya team is already preparing entrepreneurs for possible disruptions.

Training includes disaster preparedness and life skills, while entrepreneurs are stocking up on products in case markets become inaccessible. Many are also encouraging their communities to purchase clean cookstoves to help families stay warm during
the rainy season.

Kenya Country Manager Grace Mboya emphasized the need to ensure entrepreneurs have access to solar lamps, as electricity blackouts are common during heavy rains. Solar lighting will also help students studying for National Examinations in October and November.

Approximately 46 counties are considered at risk, with an estimated two million people potentially affected and up to 500,000 displaced.

Lighting the way! Solar Sister!
