When people think about impact, they often picture a woman entrepreneur selling a solar lantern or a family gaining access to clean energy.

What they don't see are the systems working behind the scenes.

Over the past year, Solar Sister improved our internal systems, reporting, and accountability processes by approximately 75%.

Why does that matter?

Because stronger systems help us better support the women entrepreneurs bringing clean energy, opportunity, and income to their communities.

The training, mentorship, and support you see in the field are made possible by the work happening behind the scenes every day.

Strong systems help create lasting impact.

☀️When the sun goes down, life shouldn’t have to pause.
A simple solar light can make a big difference, helping children study at night, families spend more quality time together, and small businesses stay open a little longer. It’s cleaner, safer, and more affordable, while bringing comfort and new possibilities into homes and communities.
Light creates new and brighter opportunities.
Small Changes = Big Impact

This past spring, Emelyne Mitoma joined Solar Sister as a Constellations Fellow, working with our Impact Hub and Systems team. In her blog post, "What I Learned Building Systems for Women Who Light the World," she shares insights from her experience and about the people, processes, and systems that support women-led clean energy entrepreneurship.
"What I will remember most is not any single task or tool. It is the feeling of working for an organization whose mission you genuinely believe in. Solar Sister is full of people who show up every day because the work matters to them. Getting to contribute to that, even from behind the scenes and even in ways that most people will never notice, was something I am truly grateful for.
If the light reaches a rural home because a woman entrepreneur made a sale that was recorded correctly, reconciled accurately, and supported by a system that worked, then the behind-the-scenes work was worth every detail."

Pamela Bukweye’s energy is contagious.💪🏾

Living in western Kenya near Kenya’s last tropical rainforest, Pamela is raising two children while growing her clean energy business as a Solar Sister Entrepreneur.

Before joining Solar Sister, Pamela already sold locally made cookstoves. But once she saw Solar Sister’s improved clean cooking products, she knew her customers would want something better and more efficient.

Today, she’s growing her business, helping families switch to cleaner cooking solutions, and building greater stability for her own family along the way.

“I bought the first stove to sample and never looked back.”

👉🏾Friday Facts! In off-grid communities, solar-powered businesses have increased profits by up to 50%, improving livelihoods.
How Solar Drives Prosperity:
•Off-Grid Expanded Operating Hours: Unlocking reliable lighting enables service shops (such as tailors and retail markets) and agricultural businesses to operate after dark, increasing productive hours by up to 44%.
•Reduced Spoilage & Costs:
Solar-powered micro-chillers and cold storage cut post-harvest losses by up to 50%, opening up entirely new, premium markets for rural farmers.
•Fuel Independence: By completely replacing expensive, volatile diesel fuel, small business owners drastically reduce overhead and stabilize long-term operating costs.

For millions of women and families, clean cooking is a public health, gender, and daily survival issue. Household air pollution from dirty cooking fuels continues to affect lives across communities, yet awareness around the risks remains low.
The smoke emitted when women are cooking can be like smoking two packs of ci******es a day. The effects include respiratory illness, heart disease, and strokes, resulting in premature death.
Clean Cooking will scale when people believe it is non-negotiable for their survival. The risk is especially dire in sub-Saharan Africa.
No woman should die because she wants to cook for her family. Not in 2026. Not when solutions exist. Not when the real barrier is awareness.

Help us get the word out to support clean cooking! Part of Solar Sister's core model is to train and support entrepreneurs to distribute clean cookstoves to their communities.

Women play a critical role in increasing awareness and generating demand for clean cooking solutions due to their networks and community relationships. The clean cooking value chain also offers new pathways for women’s economic empowerment, providing opportunities for women entrepreneurs to contribute to a thriving global clean-cooking industry. Clean cooking is often discussed as an energy or market issue, but it is much more than that.
For millions of women and families, it is a public health issue, a gender issue, and a daily survival issue. Household air pollution from dirty cooking fuels continues to affect lives across communities, yet awareness around the risks remains low.
Access matters, but awareness matters too.
People are more likely to adopt clean cooking solutions when they understand the health, economic, and environmental impact.
Clean cooking cannot be treated as optional. It requires coordinated action, public awareness, and community engagement.
