💜 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH | MYTH VS. FACT

Instead of asking, “Why don't they just leave?” let's ask, “How can we support them?”

Leaving is a process, not a single decision. Survivors deserve compassion, understanding, and support without judgment, no matter where they are in that journey.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let's challenge the myths, listen without judgment, and remind survivors that they are not alone. 💜

At YWCA Great Falls, Mercy Home provides safety, advocacy, and support to survivors of domestic violence and their children.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Myth vs. Fact

Myth: Domestic violence only involves physical harm.

Fact: Domestic violence can be physical, emotional, financial, and psychological.

Abuse may look like constant criticism, manipulation, controlling access to money, online stalking, threatening messages, or sharing private images without consent. Not all abuse leaves visible bruises, but all abuse can have lasting impacts.

This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let's expand our understanding of abuse and help create communities built on respect, safety, and healthy relationships.

Young people today face unique challenges, including related to unhealthy relationships and digital abuse. Digital abuse can take many forms including controlling someone’s social media accounts, sending threatening messages, or sharing private images without consent.

These actions can erode trust, invade privacy, and cause emotional trauma. Educating youth about healthy boundaries and consent can help prevent abuse and foster healthy relationships.

On September 11, 2001, our nation experienced unimaginable loss. We honor the 2,977 lives taken that day and hold their families and loved ones in our hearts.

As we reflect on that moment, we remember not just the heartbreak, but the profound heroism of the firefighters, paramedics, police officers, military members, and everyday people who put the lives of others before their own. Their acts of bravery reminded us of the very best of humanity, the strength of compassion and the power of coming together.

May we never forget the lives lost, the sacrifices made, and the compassion that brought people together in the days that followed.
