Prairie Pothole Joint Venture

Prairie Pothole Joint Venture The PPJV is a voluntary, self-directed network of partners working across the Prairie Pothole Region. The PPJV operates across the U.S.

Prairie Pothole Region, covering portions of Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Iowa. This unique area contains millions of wetlands and is one of the richest wetland systems in the world. These "prairie potholes" and their surrounding grasslands are highly productive and support an incredible diversity of plant, animal, and bird life. Our partnership involves federal and state ag

encies, non-governmental conservation groups, private landowners, scientists, universities, policy makers, resource managers, corporations, and others interested in prairie habitat conservation.

HISTORY HAS BEEN MADE!

When it launched in 2019, “Conservation For A Continent" set an ambitious $3 billion goal.

Now, it has set a record, and we are completely in awe of what this community has accomplished together!

Together, Ducks Unlimited volunteers and supporters have generated an unprecedented $4.06 BILLION for wetlands conservation! A first-of-its-kind achievement for landscape conservation!

Behind every dollar raised and every acre conserved is a person who showed up. None of this happens without YOU! Every banquet ticket, every donation, every hour volunteered, it all added up to something the conservation world has never seen before. From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU!

Here's to the wetlands. Here's to the waterfowl. And here's to the greatest conservation community on the planet!

This American Wetlands Month, we’re highlighting a comeback story and how important wetlands are for wildlife, livestock and healthy landscapes across North Dakota.

Talkington Dam, west of Dickinson, was once a thriving wetland until an issue with the spillway structure left it dry for years. Through collaboration between NDNRT, U.S. Forest Service, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, and other partners, the site was restored and revitalized in the fall of 2025.

Today it once again supplies vital habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds and other wetland and grassland species, and is a water source for livestock, mule deer, pronghorn, sharp-tailed grouse and other wildlife. The project demonstrates how wetlands are essential to both conservation and working lands, while highlighting the power of partnerships in conserving North Dakota’s prairie and wetland habitats.

You just wanted a wholesome moment raising awareness for one of North America’s most declining grassland birds… what could possibly go wrong? 😅
Wait for that look 😂👇

Introducing the Sprague’s Pipit (feat. one very opinionated son) — halfway through, he staged a full protest, demanded a location change, and I’m pretty sure renegotiated the entire tattoo contract mid-tantrum.

Grasslands are important. So is toddler democracy. 😂👏

If you're interested in learning more about the Prairie Pothole Region and wetlands/grasslands, this is a great listen! Not to mention, it features some of our favorite people: Dr. Josh Vest, PPJV Science Coordinator; Casey Anderson (NDGF), PPJV Management Board Member; and Cayla Bendel (NDGF), PPJV Communications Committee Member. We're very proud to work with these folks!

The Sprague’s pipit is one of North America’s declining grassland birds, found across the prairie pothole region where native grasslands still stretch across the horizon. These incredible songbirds rely on healthy grasslands—many of which are also working lands that support agriculture and rural communities. Through strong conservation partnerships, we can protect these vital landscapes for wildlife and people alike, ensuring species like the Sprague’s pipit continue to thrive for generations to come. 💛🌾

🤝 TNC + PF + DNR + USFWS: Conservation Partnerships in Action
Big things are happening for our prairies! 🌾

Thanks to a powerful collaboration between The Nature Conservancy in Minnesota (TNC), Pheasants Forever - Minnesota (PF), the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), nearly 1,900 acres in Clay County are now protected for wildlife, water, and people.

🌎 This effort is a major win for the Prairie Pothole Region—one of North America’s most important landscapes for wetlands and grassland species. These newly protected lands will restore habitat, reconnect prairie corridors, and support rare and iconic wildlife.

From ducks and pollinators to clean water and outdoor recreation, the benefits will ripple across the region for generations.
💚 Proof that when strong conservation partnerships come together, incredible things happen.

🌾💧 It’s American Wetlands Month—the perfect time to celebrate the incredible role wetlands play across the Prairie Pothole Region.

These unique landscapes aren’t just beautiful—they’re essential. From supporting wildlife and migratory birds to improving water quality and reducing flooding, wetlands are a vital part of our natural systems.

And here’s the best part: many of these wetlands exist right alongside working lands. Farmers, ranchers, and landowners across our region are proving every day that agriculture and conservation can go hand in hand. 🌱🤝

Through strong partnerships with industry, conservation nonprofits, landowners, tribes, federal and state agencies, and local communities, we’re working together to conserve what matters most. These collaborations are key to protecting wetlands while sustaining the livelihoods that depend on them.

By stewarding wetlands, we’re protecting habitat, strengthening rural communities, and ensuring these resources are here for future generations.
Take a moment to watch and learn more about why wetlands matter—and how working lands and partnerships are part of the solution. 🎥👇
