Lawmakers are attempting to resolve a water dispute between two Kansas cities and a neighboring county that has spawned three lawsuits, one administrative case and, most recently, a piece of proposed legislation seeking to modify county authority.

Water is one of the most critical and finite resources in Kansas, and decisions surrounding its use have direct and long-lasting impacts on agriculture, infrastructure, economic development, and community sustainability. Local officials are best positioned to understand these impacts because they live and work in the communities affected.

In 2024, the Chief Engineer of KDA-DWR approved four Areas of Concern within Big Bend GMD5. Over the next year, we our District will be working on action plans to address these important issues.

Some concerns focus on how much water we have, while others address the quality of our water.

Here in Central Kansas, we view water resources a little differently than the rest of the state — and that’s why your input matters.

Augmentation is the only long-term, durable solution to address the challenges of most irrigators and those of us concerned with preserving wildlife. I encourage the NRCS to stand behind the GMD 5 proposed remedies contained in the EIS plan.
