Many people think of the holidays as a magical time of joy, family, & excitement, but that is not the case for everyone. For survivors of abuse, the holiday season is often a time filled with stress and anxiety.
Nationally, Police respond to approximately 20% more calls for domestic violence during the holiday season. Why?
*Increased Alcohol Consumption: Holiday festivities often lead to excessive alcohol use, which plays a big part in fueling aggression and violence.
*Extended time in the home. Holiday breaks increase time spent with abusive family members, limiting victims' opportunities to escape.
*Holiday Stress: Financial burdens, family tension, and setting unrealistic expectations
*Social Pressure: Victims may feel pressured to "put on a happy face," or pretend that it truly is "the happiest time of year" in shame, instead of reaching out for help.
How can you help support someone who might be struggling?
*Listen to them: Allow them to talk freely without judgement.
*Open your home to them as a safe place. Even if it is a short escape for only a couple of hours, it may be their only time decompress and find resources.
*Be open minded & take them seriously. It is very possible you may not know about the abuse happening in someone's life. A lot can happen behind closed doors.
If you or someone you know is in a dangerous situation, you can start building a safety plan now. Our crisis hotline has an advocate available to call or text any time, 24/7. 620-792-1885.

That being said, if you have a need for adult or child clothing items, cold weather gear, household goods, or hygiene items, please contact our office and we will be happy to help supply that need. 🫶
