Vocalis Youth Choir

Vocalis Youth Choir The mission of the Vocalis Youth Choir is to educate young people in the art of choral music while pr Our name, Vocalis, means “to have a voice” in Latin.

We believe that developing one’s voice as a young person is an important part of growing up and learning about oneself. The VYC strives to help all children and young people to find their voice, both as an individual and as a chorister.

Our annual house concert is coming up!

Each year prior to our free spring concerts, VYC holds a friend- and fund-raising house concert.

These smaller and more intimate performances are an opportunity for us to connect more closely with the members of our choir community whose ongoing support makes all of this possible.

This year, we’ll be returning to the exceptional home of Beverly Hosokawa in Great Barrington, MA. Beverly has been a longtime supporter of Vocalis, and we are immensely grateful to her for welcoming us into her home for a second time for this event.

Each season, it’s tradition that our eldest ensemble, Encore, shares a dinner out together to celebrate our camaraderie and to further get to know each other outside of rehearsal.

Thank you to our Artistic Director, Julie Bickford and to our collaborative pianist, Dorothy Cowles for making this happen. It is always such a joy, and this past Monday was no exception.

Here’s to another successful Encore dinner, and to the start of a new, joyous season!

🌽 Three weekends ago, we partnered with Taft Farm and Berkshire Bounty to give our choristers a chance to give back to their community. Huge thanks to Taft Farm, to Berkshire Bounty, and to our Vocalis families who joined in corn picking!

We picked approximately 1200 pounds of corn, and all of it will go to support our Berkshire neighbors through Berkshire Bounty.

It was such a fun way to spend a fall morning together, and we are so proud of our singers and families for pitching in!

We’re throwing a barn party!

Our annual friend- and fund-raising event is nearly here, and this year we’re lucky enough to be hosted by Greenagers at their beautiful home base, April Hill Farm.

The Choir will be sharing excerpts from our spring concert series “Earth, Sea, and Sky,” joined by artist-in-residence Eric Martin on the fiddle. We’re celebrating nature, our planet, and the rich human experience.

See the second slide for more details.

We can’t wait to see you!

This season, Vocalis has teamed up with three local artists to offer our first-ever Artist Workshop Series, available free of charge to all of our choristers!

Last Saturday marked the first of three workshops: a lesson in vibrant, explosive watercolor with artist Kathryn Freeman. In this workshop, students used powdered watercolors to create works of art packed to the brim with color.

Powdered watercolor is an especially fluid medium, perfect for open expression and creativity. It explodes into vibrant colors when sprinkled onto wet paper and can be moved by brushing or tilting the paper to create new colors, patterns, and shapes. Our choristers worked first with powdered watercolors and then with soft pastels to add more layers and textures.

We are so grateful to Kathryn Freeman for her tutelage and for providing this wonderful opportunity for our choristers to further express their abundant creativity.

Join us this coming weekend for “Songs of the Season!”

Directed by Julie Bickford, this concert series features traditional seasonal songs such as “Good King Wenceslas,” “Noël Nouvelet,” and“Silent Night,” along with more contemporary works by Samuel Sim, Jacob Narverud, and Sarah Quartel.

The choir will be accompanied by a string trio featuring Eric Martin and Eileen Markland on the violin and Lucy Bardo on the cello.

These concerts are a lovely showcase for the choir. Each and every singer has put in the work to make this a beautiful performance, and we simply cannot wait to share it with you.

We hope to see you there!
