Our monthly meeting is scheduled for 6 pm tomorrow at the Grayson branch of the Carter County Public Library.

We will be discussing some important business as well as examining a set of several dozen nineteenth-century documents that were recently donated to us. We will also be discussing a recent digitization project undertaken by two seniors in the history department at Kentucky Christian University, preserving ledgers for Cooksey's Dry Goods dating from around 1900 (pictured).

Please join us!

A gentlemen contacted us looking for this cemetery in the Olive Hill area and we're trying to help him out. Does anyone know the exact location of the cemetery he's looking for?

The first photo shows Grayson's Methodist Episcopal church, built around 1915 on the corner of Second and Hord. The second photo shows the remains of that church after a devastating fire completely destroyed that structure in early 1928.

The church was rebuilt on the same site by 1931 and that building stands today as Bagby Memorial United Methodist Church. The last photo gives a historic view of the current church.

The Carter County Historical Society would like to pay tribute to the life of Dr. Roland Burns, who passed a few weeks ago. Dr. Burns, or just Doc, was one of the greatest advocates for the preservation of the history of this region. He went to great personal expense not only to preserve a number of historic log cabins, but for years hosted an annual event for schoolchildren and the public to learn about our history and see these buildings for themselves.

From his obituary: "Wolfpen Woods Pioneer Village was his greatest and most loved accomplishment. The village, made up of multiple hewn log houses, was the setting for teaching over 42,000 school children from 3 states the pioneer history and folkways during its 17 years in operation."

We remember the life of Dr. Burns and offer our sincere condolences to his loved ones.

View Dr. Roland L Burns's obituary, contribute to their memorial, see their funeral service details, and more.
