Lake County nonprofit leaders came together last week for connection, conversation and professional development at our August Executive Director Roundtable.

We began with a speed networking activity led by Beth DeRosier, Executive Director of Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association (GLASA), giving leaders a chance to meet new colleagues and exchange ideas. We also made time for folks to update their professional headshots!

From there, thoughtful conversations focused on the challenges facing our nonprofit community, possible solutions, opportunities to collaborate and ways we can learn from one another. We’re grateful for the knowledge and dedication these leaders bring to Lake County and for their willingness to share, listen and support one another.

: The Small Business Growth Initiative (SBGI) was recently featured on the Lake County News-Sun front page!

The article highlights SBGI’s fourth cohort and the small business owners who are building, growing and strengthening their businesses across Waukegan, North Chicago and Zion.

SBGI is a collaborative effort between Allies for Community Business and LCCF, connecting local entrepreneurs with capital, coaching and resources to help their businesses grow.

It’s inspiring to see the impact this program has had since 2022, supporting small businesses and strengthening communities across Lake County.

We’re excited to continue this work and build on what we’ve accomplished together!

Strong nonprofits are built on strong leadership and strong partnerships.

This idea grounded last week’s Nonprofit Education & Networking event, Part 2 of the Executive Director’s Guide to Board Engagement, hosted in partnership with the Vernon Area Public Library and Givenkindorg . The event brought local nonprofit leaders together for a continued conversation about partnership between nonprofits and their boards.

Facilitated by Allison Henry, Clinical Assistant Professor at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management, the session included small-group discussions and hands-on activities that helped executive directors and board members put key concepts into practice.

Thank you to Allison for sharing her expertise and to Northwestern University for sponsoring this event! And, as always, thank you to Vernon Area Public Library and GiveNKind for your partnership in bringing this educational series to the local nonprofit community.

Last Monday, Allies for Community Business and LCCF hosted the second meeting of the 2026 Small Business Growth Initiative (SBGI) Cohort with Tim Lanai.

Tim led an insightful workshop on “Knowing Your Numbers,” guiding cohort participants through key financial concepts that help businesses make data-driven decisions. We’re grateful to College of Lake County for generously hosting us at their Lakeshore Campus and to Tim for sharing his knowledge and expertise with the cohort!

SBGI is a collaborative effort between Allies for Community Business and LCCF. Designed to support small business owners in Waukegan, North Chicago and Zion. The program provides access to financial capital, hands-on coaching and valuable connections—all to help entrepreneurs strengthen their businesses and contribute to thriving local economies.
