He has cerebral palsy, a brain tumor in his hypothalamus, active treatment since 2.5. All while fighting to reach his dreams Mason is an inspiration to so many people. He always has a smile on his face through every obstacle he faces. He has learned to see the positives in life, and always wants to make the people around him happy. He is the biggest animal loves, and absolutely loves electronics a
nd seeing how they works. Mason was born at 29 weeks and suffered a birth injury resulting in holes in the white matter of his brain. Mason was through to never know the world around him or even speak. Mason since he was little has defied the odds. He has reached all his milestones just took some extra time and has been speaking with an amazing vocabulary since he was very young. At 18 months old Mason stopped gaining weight but he was growing. We couldn't figured out what was going on so when Mason was 2.5 years old he went to St. Louis to get a surgery to reduce the tone in his body from his cerebral palsy. We believed that the tone might have been causing him to burn extra calories. Mason during surgery was diagnosed with a brain tumor that had spread to his spinal cord. The tumor being an awful one that caused a very serious condition called diencephalic syndrome (speeds up a person metabolic rate) the tumor location being in his hypothalamus acted like a double edge sword. Mason was requiring more calories to gain weight but his brain wasn't signally his body to want to eat. Essentially he was starving to death. He also had gone into early onset puberty. His optic nerve also goes through his tumor and has caused him to lose fields of his vision. Once we got home to Maine mason had undergone a more surgery pretty back to back. He had a brain biopsy, g tube placement, hormone implant to stop the puberty, and a port placed. Mason started chemo 1/2017 and was on active treatment until 2/2021. At this time his tumor had shrunk and had been stable for a year. We thought there was a chance what was left was scar tissue. Sadly we were wrong and these tumors are just awful and it started to grow again. We had to make the choice 4/2022 to start chemo again.
5/2022 Mason went through a major hip surgery to help him have better alignment to make him walk better, with better alignment. Mason is a truly warrior!!!
