As I struggle to deal with the spectrum of emotions we have all faced and continue to face, I have never been prouder to live here in Maine.
Like the rocks our state is built upon, we are strong. Like the cliffs that endure the constant pounding of waves, we are resilient. Like the pine trees that tower over our forests, we stand tall. Like our awe-inspiring mountains, we are steadfast. Like the sunlight that first hits our shores every morning, we are warm. And like the ancient oaks and maples that emerge from winter strong after months in the dark, this darkness too shall pass. However, just as the landscape is scarred by winter’s frost heaves, cracked stones, and toppled trees, we will forever bear the scars of what happened here this week.
We owe it to the generations that came before to remain the hearty people that have survived hundreds of dark times. We owe it to the generations to follow to ensure that they never have to go through a dark time like this. We are the people of Maine. We lead.
