Posy-Filled Pockets

Posy-Filled Pockets Deathy People, Doing Deathy Things, Often in Deathy Places Posy-Filled Pockets is a product of the movement. Death. Everyone's doing it.

Like-minded death professionals, artists, journalists, and academics everywhere have been adding their voices, creating collaborations in their own communities, and spreading the word. It's time to change the way our culture handles death. We invite you to a cornucopia of death-y goodness as we explore these issues here in the historically rich Gold Country of California. Light-hearted and death-r

elated talks on things you've never heard of, presentations of the arts and symbolism found in death culture past, present and future, demonstrations showing aspects of little-known practices and particulars of the death industry. Sometimes we can be found hosting outings to cemeteries (of course) and other subject-related locations led by experts in tombstone symbols, burial practices, and the morbid history that shapes the Gold Country's rich place in the history of the Wild West. We're all about good times and great stories, but our true intent is to destroy the stigma of this complicated, taboo subject, and educate others on their rights, options, and ability to control their own demise. We hold workshops on getting affairs in order, making decisions in advance, and having a say in how your personal journey ends. Educators and advocates inform on options, procedure, and legal aspects. We discuss grief, loss, and celebrating life. We hope to remove the fear of the unknown, and embrace an aspect of life that effects every living thing, eventually.

We regretfully announce the death of writer, critic, social activist and dear, dear friend, Gustavo Esteva.

Through the podcast Blind Man In Black, we had three lovely, insightful conversations about death, love, and transformation with Gustavo, the most recent just two months ago.

He was the founder of the Universidad de la Tierra and a participant in the dialogues of San Andrés la Larraínzar, where he made theoretical remarks on the importance of autonomy.

He was part of the Center for Intercultural Meetings and Dialogues and is the author, co-author or editor of more than 40 books, more than 500 essays and thousands of published articles. Throughout his life, he was the recipient of numerous academic honors, chaired several professional organizations as well as the council of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development. He was a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

Our loss of our dear friend is also the world's loss-Gustavo was a fierce, brilliant activist and gentle, wise teacher. Our deepest sympathies to his partner Nicole, his children, grandchildren, and numerous friends and students across the globe.

This is the 3rd part of a 3 part series with Gustavo and PFP's Rachel Snyder on "The Art of Dying".

My Co-Host/Wife (Rachel Snyder) and I have a universally much needed conversation on Transforming Rage into Love with Deprofessionalized Intellectual, Author...

A year ago today, Posies lost our very talented project artist and frequent content contributor, Damien Baranowski.

Damien was very invested in the project and contributed not only our urn logo, but designed our business cards, many flyers, and buttons that we sometimes handed out at shows. He also contributed many gorgeous cemetery photos and a handful of essays based on his personal experience and relationship with death.

His contributions lent heavily to our overall esthetic and his passionate investment in what we were doing was a driving force that sometimes single handedly powered us through times when Tim and Rachel became overwhelmed with other responsibilities and had to set things down-Damien always pressed us to pick it back up, because he felt it was so important.

Damien’s interest in the positive death movement was, like many of us, germinated in a childhood trauma involving the death of a loved one, and it’s fair to say that that same trauma laid the path to his premature exit. This is why this work is so important to us, and so vital to our current culture-the stigma surrounding talking about death and dying should never lend to death itself.

We did not announce Damien’s passing when it happened because It was simply overwhelming at the time. Rachel had the deep privilege of being with him in his last moments, and along with Tim’s remote guidance, was honored to bring him into her care as his funeral counselor to perform all of the final required steps. This was obviously a difficult task, and once it was done, quiet reflection was necessary for self care.

A few weeks ago, while going through some old files, a folder with Damien’s name on it was dug out, and in it was a large pile of unfinished sketches he had been working on for the project. We’re sharing them here on this first anniversary of our profound loss to honor the work he did for us and the time he dedicated to this labor of love.

Godspeed, Damien. May the weight you carried in life be ever forgotten, and your wings well rested.
