h Gold Country Scout Group, BPSA. The Baden-Powell Service Association (BPSA) was formed in the U.S. in 2006 as an independent and traditional-style Scouting Association. Our association continues to perpetuate the principles and practices of Scouting laid down by Robert Baden-Powell in 1907 that have been developed and refined in Scout associations around the world for over a century. Our aim is to promote good citizenship and holistic training in habits of observation, discipline, self-reliance, and loyalty. We teach real outdoor skills and engage in adventures, campouts, and community-building. Service is one of our core tenets, as we create a culture where children and adults ask, "How can we help?"

The BPSA believes that everyone deserves a chance to participate in the movement that Baden-Powell started, and with that, we have crafted our policy of inclusion:

The BPSA offers a choice for those with curiosity, energy, and independence of spirit. We are committed to providing an appropriate alternative and community-oriented Scouting experience. The BPSA welcomes everyone, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation, class, ability, religion (or no religion), or other differentiating factors. Our mission is to provide a positive learning environment within the context of democratic participation and social justice. We foster the development of Scouts in an environment of mutual respect and cooperation. The BPSA is totally independent of, and not affiliated with, either the Boy Scouts of America or the Girls Scouts of the USA. We are members of the World Federation of Independent Scouts (WFIS) and as such are not in competition with other American Scouting associations; we are only their brothers and sisters in Scouting. The training scheme devised by Baden-Powell is based on using the natural desires of young people as a guide to the activities that will attract and hold them. Our method and practice provide young people with the opportunity to craft and develop their own adventures, trips, and service projects. The appeal of true Scouting has always been to that element of the vagabond, pioneer, and explorer, which is part of our nature, and is at its most evident in youth. Scouting is an outdoor movement and that is part of its character. To whatever degree conditions may, at time, force us indoors—such as weather, darkness, or town life—we must regard this as second-best necessity and never as a satisfactory substitute for the real thing.

49th Gold Country, BPSA is currently not holding meetings. We are in need of a new Group Scoutmaster and multiple section leaders before we can continue. You can still join BPSA as a 1st Lone Scout, or join 49th Gold Country and do your scouting independently (I am able to give advice/training and Dole out badges, uniforms, handbooks, and schwag). You can participate in area Brownsea Training Camps for adult/leadership training, and also attend Hullabaloo in California and/or Oregon and Washington.

As former Group Scoutmaster for the 49th I would like to support BPSA growth as I believe in the mission and the fun, but I can no longer offer as much of my time and still provide sufficient instruction as I homeschool my 3 daughters and have no family nearby to help out. We are still scouting as a family.

I encourage you to join if you have any interest in co-ed, all age, all outdoor traditional scouting. BPSA National is supported by some amazingly friendly and helpful individuals. I will keep up our group charter in hopes that the right individual will step up as our new leader. You have a ready-to-go group, and I will support you. ;)

Scout on!

Happy Holidays, 49th Gold Country! Of course you knew there would be something otter-related for Christmas time. ;o) This is a friendly, happy, "scouty" family movie if there ever was one.

Members of the 49th Gold Country, 31st River Valley, and 88th Sierra met for a weekend of scout camping at Camp Nauvoo near Placerville, CA. The setting was wonderful and the weekend was jam-packed with activities. Crawdad baiting, archery, soap carving, board games in the lodge, hikes up the canyon (including sections the Timberwolves had to climb with ropes), obstacle courses, wide games, a fun campfire with great skits from the 88th Sierra and 49th Gold Country, plus a Timberwolf Jungle Dance. Campfire and dutch oven cooking topped it all off.

Well said perspective on the BSA development today from our friends up in Washington, in case you are curious how this affects scouting.

The scouting board of directors voted unanimously to make the historic change in an organization that has been primarily for boys since its founding.

49th Gold Country would like to acknowledge the nationwide celebration of Indigenous Peoples' Day. http://time.com/4968067/indigenous-peoples-day-columbus-day-cities/ Also, we would like to express our sympathy to all of the people that have been displaced by the recent fires here in Northern California, who know now better than most what it is like to be forced out of the place they call home. Let these plights at least serve to bring us all closer together in understanding.

More cities opt to celebrate it every year

We've been busy so far this fall! The Otters are strong this year. They worked on some bear encounter education and had a successful visit to the Timberwolf Pack to share in an Intro to Whittling and Knife Safety lesson. Looking forward to our group camp-out!
