Grass Lake Community Wellness Initiative is a community-based organization with the mission to positively and pro-actively enhance our community's health and wellness. Community members, township and village officials, law enforcement officers, school district employees, local health organizations, and others have come together to develop a long term wellness plan that will satisfy the health needs of our community for years to come. Avoiding Unhealthy Substances - To share information with the purpose of reducing the use of unhealthy substances.
2. Eating Better - To inform people how our diets can positively influence our lifestyles.
3. Connecting with Others In Healthy Ways - To create a community of caring individuals who support each other in overall community health and well-being.
4. Moving More - To support our community by offering effective ways for all ages to exercise and improve their health. If you are interested in learning how to become a part of this effort, contact Initiative leader Dawn Cuddie at [email protected].

Beautiful walking weather ahead!

Join us Saturday for our Walking group!

Sometimes the best thing we can do for ourselves is simply get up, get outside, and move together.

Walk at your own pace.
Bring a friend.
Meet some new people.
Get your steps in.
And enjoy some good conversation along the way!

This is about creating healthy habits together and making movement something we actually look forward to. 💪

Slow down and try this soothing restorative yoga pose to bring cool and calm into late summer.

How to do it:
Position yourself at the foot of a chair, in front of your sofa or footstool. Gently swing your legs up onto the seat as you lay back on a blanket or yoga mat. Use a blanket or pillow under your head and slightly draw your chin towards your chest. Lay another blanket over your hips for grounding and an eye pillow over your eyes, if you have one.
Breathe naturally, mindfully, and stay for as long as you can, 20 minutes or so. 💜😌

The summer months keep us busy; lots of outdoors activity, yard work, vacations and family trips. And as the heat builds up, intensifying; warming the lake and drying the land, it can also have the same affects on us, bringing dryness, mental and physical exhaustion and a feeling of burn out.

In Āyurveda - Yoga’s sister science - summer is Pitta season, carrying the qualities of hot, dry, sharp, oily and penetrating. As the pitta qualities increase in us, we might start to get sharp, intense headaches, digestive issues and dry, itchy or rashy skin. If you’re someone in whom pitta dosha is dominant, you’re going to feel this all the more, and if you’re in the pitta stage of life, a woman and in perimenopause - oh good golly, watch out!! 🥵🤯🥱

This is a sign, then, that we need to invite the opposite qualities - cool, moist, and soft - into our lives, both in the food we eat and the way we do life. I, for one, have found I really need to lay off the coffee at this time of year - it’s just way too heating and drying - and also that treating myself with softness and kindness helps to quell my (self)critical, racing mind.

Enter Restorative Yoga, which encourages us to be still, stop gabbing, and just be, surrendering to the support of softness, safety and stability.

This posture shown here is what one of my teachers, Judith Lasater calls ‘Instant Maui’, and resting in this pose at the end of a busy day or, after lunch, can shift everything.

I LOVE restorative yoga, and I’m grateful for its urging us to go gently through life and let go of some of the in-built (taught?) need to strive and push and go harder that plagues us and keeps us in a constant cortisol spike.

Enjoy the remainder of summer, peeps, and maybe make some time to get yer legs up!
