Iโ€™m deeply concerned and saddened to see a message as simple and powerful as โ€œHate Has No Home Hereโ€ removed from a school environment โ€” especially when it was meant to convey inclusion, respect, and safety for all students. A classroom is not just a place of academic learning; itโ€™s where young people begin to understand their communities, develop empathy, and learn to respect diverse identities and lived experiences.

Removing a poster because of the presence of rainbow and transgender flag imagery sends the wrong message โ€” that acknowledging the existence and dignity of LGBTQ+ students and staff is somehow inappropriate or controversial. This not only undermines efforts to create welcoming spaces for every child, but it also risks marginalizing students simply for who they are. In a world where so many young people already struggle with acceptance and belonging, affirmations of safety matter deeply.

Symbols of inclusion โ€” like rainbows and trans pride colors โ€” are not about โ€œsexuality contentโ€ in a harmful or inappropriate way. They are about human dignity and ensuring young people know they are seen, respected, and valued. Schools should be places where every student, regardless of their background or identity, can feel safe and supported.

I urge school leaders everywhere to listen carefully to families โ€” especially LGBTQ+ families and young people โ€” and to lead with compassion, not fear. Policies and decisions should uphold an environment that welcomes all students, fosters belonging, and recognizes that safety and respect are critical foundations for learning. Everyone deserves to walk into their school knowing they matter.
